| DESIGN NAME: STRING GAME OF LIGHT PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting installation INSPIRATION: String game is one of the most popular games all over the world. In China, people often play string game with friends and children. The game teaches them how to cooperate with each other and is enjoyable to play. The lighting concept comes from string game to highlight the commitment to collaboration of two districts in the future. In Chinese traditional string game, two people need to play with each other to make string figure. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Jing'an District and Zhabei District, are located in the center of Shanghai, China. At the end of 2015, it was announced that the two districts were to be merged into a new district. To commemorate this event, the government wanted to build a unique installation at the junction of two districts, as a symbol of unity and cooperation. A lighting installation builds an illusion of strings connecting the top of road lighting poles, redefining a new landscape space over Hengfeng Road Bridge at night. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The light installation is separated into three parts, the generator, the optical reflector and the receiver. The generator is installed at the base of road lighting pole for easily maintenance. Two laser light beams are generated at the base and go through a pipe fixed on the pole with an opening covered with tempered glass. The pipe is helpful to keep people from touching the laser for safety. The reflector is made from mirrors to change the direction of lasers in an accurate way to get to the receivers on the other poles. The intense energy of the laser easily causes glare and light pollution. A receiver, which is an empty triangle box covered with black louvers, is carefully designed to minimize the reflective glare, and at the same time all the beam directions are fixed, eventually reaching the receiving box precisely. Three parts are integrated into a road lighting pole. All the old road poles are replaced by the new ones without occupying any more space which was an important requirement from the client. Fixed direction of light and well-set louvers avoid the glare and light pollution. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 7000mm TAGS: LIGHTING INSTALLATION, STRING GAME OF LIGHT RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: Laser light is the best technical way to display the strings of light according to the concept. Initially the laser light generators were going to be located at the top of the poles. The size and weight was a big concern for the installation. After extensive research our design team solved this problem using an innovative solution. Optical mirror is applied to change direction of laser and the location of the laser generator which being put at the bottom of the pole.
