DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Heaven

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lamp

INSPIRATION:
Among Lithuanian Pagans there was a tradition to make complex art pieces out of straws called Straw Gardens. They were held at home as a charm and it was believed they can bring harmony and peace to that place. Straw Gardens are divided to three sections: underworld, earth and heaven. In Baltic religion people thought, that seeking a way to heaven ensures happiness and peace. Sadly, but today this tradition is often underestimated and slowly fades. I want to revive this beautiful art pieces by giving them a new look and purpose.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Lamp Heaven stands out from other lamps with its unique frame that emits light itself. It has flexible LED wires which are arranged within organic glass tubes. It's easy to assemble, so it could be sold and packaged in parts.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The straw gardens were always hand made. The goal is to encourage the people to build more by hands and remember traditions. As a result, each owner of the lamp Heaven will be provided with an instruction how to collect the lamp. In addition, the lamp can vary in different forms and shapes, so the person can make its own unique design. This way, the lamp becomes unique and more valuable to the owner.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The idea came in 2015 summer in Klaipeda, Lithuania, but the project itself started in 2017 September and is ongoing.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This is a project for my Master degree studies. Work subject: Lithuanian folk art Straw gardens. Main purpose of the project is to revive tradition by giving it a new look and adapt it to the modern human life. Research contains: mythology of the Lithuanian Straw gardens, Importance of place in the house, Analogue analysis in other countries, Types of interior lighting, Atmospheric lighting. My research goal is to analyze how the old Lithuanian pagans were so attached to their spiritual worlds and I want to try to recreate this connection once again.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest thing was to choose the final form of the lamp, because most of the shapes are very complicated and had to be adjusted to a more modern, minimalistic look. The form had to be simple enough but elegant as well, to suit different styles of nowadays interior. Also it was quite challenging for me to work with all the wires when making a prototype and to see if this lamp can actually be built at home. As a result, I had some help from my brother who specializes in electricity and together we came up with an easy to apply solution.

NAME:
Vilnius academy of arts

PROFILE:
The Vilnius Academy of Arts (Lithuanian: Vilniaus dailės akademija, previously State Art Institute of Lithuania) in Vilnius, Lithuania, grants a variety of degrees in the arts. The academy was created as a separate entity in 1940; it had previously been part of Vilnius University. It was closed during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania, and re-opened in 1944. In 1951 it was organized into the following departments: painting (including frescos, mosaics, and theatrical design), graphics, sculpture, architecture and design, and ceramics and textiles. In 1974, the Section of Artists-Decorators to the Club Industry Department of Klaipėda Faculty of the State Conservatoire of the Lithuanian Soviet Republic was established. In 1979, the Section was merged with the former State Institute of Arts of the Lithuanian Soviet Republic. After the merge, the Section was transformed into the Department of Klaipėda‘s Visual Activism, and in 1986 it was renamed the Department of Visual Communications. In 1990, after the higher school regained its former name of Vilnius Academy of Arts (hereinafter referred to as VAA), the Department has had the name of Klaipėda Department of Visual Design at VAA since 1991. 2013 for the Klaipėda subdivision of the VAA was the year of crucial change. On 20 March 2013, the VAA Senate confirmed the establishment of the Klaipėda Faculty, and on 1 October, the Faculty began its first academic year.
