DESIGN NAME: Aero
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Credenza
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the mysticism and technicality of aerodynamics, this piece tries to depict the emotional state of an era full of optimism (1920-1940) where everything was thought possible and everyone felt part of the progress, philosophically contrasting with the current feeling that progress exceeds us. It is an attempt to present a time capsule to return to that sentiment where all felt conceivable.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With the purpose of obtaining an emotional reaction and perception; this piece intends not only to extract a set of shapes and mix of materials that stimulate the senses, but also it intends to integrate and influence its environment with beams of light projected over the floor and the wall through the refraction caused by a direct light from the ceiling. The grace of its silhouette and the awareness of the blue glass symbolizes the firmament.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The glass at the top has the shape of an airplane wing and projects a shade either on the wall or on the floor, if some light is aimed to it from the ceiling (which is the suggestion to be placed at the interior space), thus interacting with the atmosphere of the room.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Begun in November 2016 with the designer visit to an aviation history museum and the immersion on the history of aviation of that. Many drawings and art approach forms were made until final cad drawings and prototypes were finished in July 2017, at the art and prototype laboratory of design G. RIOS furniture and design, in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The delicate shapes were made possible thanks to mixed techniques ranging from high-tech machinery cuts to the unique precision and character of handwork. The final shapes and assembly are handmade. The finish is a 6-layer polyurethane varnish.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Elaborated mainly in red oak, with details of zebrano sapelli wood. The top has a 12mm transparent colored glass that can be customized in different tones. The doors are equipped with high end soft closing hinges, and the interior drawer is mounted on hidden soft closing glides.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer has always been fascinated by aviation and its history, he had the need to communicate the feeling and life approach of the early aviation years (1920 to 1940). The main purpose was to communicate the feelings of the time through aerodynamics, illumination and subtle shapes of the first planes. Silhouettes of airplanes pieces where drawn and extracted and transformed into a geometric-organic concept, looking to elaborate a contemporary design based on a golden era.
CHALLENGE: The abstraction towards modern forms was the first challenge. The piece also faced the difficulty of transforming it digitally (3D cad), so it was quicker to sculpt it by hand, with the help of a belt saw, manual tools and a lot of sandpaper. In short, the prototype was hand sculpted. With the premise of not subordinating the design to the technical possibilities but on the contrary, it had to be done in this way before passing it to the digital 3D scanner and then finally get it digital.
