Interview with Gerardo Ríos Altamirano at Wednesday 15th of August 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? GR: Inspired by the mysticism and technicality of aerodynamics, this piece tries to depict the emotional state of an era full of optimism (1920-1940) where everything was thought possible and everyone felt part of the progress, philosophically contrasting with the current feeling that progress exceeds us. It is an attempt to present a time capsule to return to that sentiment where all felt conceivable. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? GR: With the purpose of obtaining an emotional reaction and perception; this piece intends not only to extract a set of shapes and mix of materials that stimulate the senses, but also it intends to integrate and influence its environment with beams of light projected over the floor and wall through the refraction caused by a direct light from the ceiling. The grace of its silhouette and the awareness of the blue glass symbolizes the firmament. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? GR: To build a signature brand of design at the highest standard of the world. Bringing furniture and other artifacts from art (admiration and contemplation) to the interactive and enjoyable daily life of people that wants in their every day objects of interaction, a source of inspiration. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? GR: Begun in November 2016 with the designer´s visit to an aviation history museum and the immersion on the history of aviation. Many drawings and art approach shapes were made until final CAD drawings and prototypes were finished in July 2017, at the art and prototype laboratory of design G. RIOS furniture and design, in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? GR: This was one of the most inspirational models of all time for me. It was developed spontaneously and with no commercial purpose, but had a lot of attention making itself a favorite not only for me. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? GR: For the moment, all my designs are produced by my furniture factory at Merida, Yucatan. I’m searching for partners to develop a commercial set of luxury stores for this signature brand and share the product and concepts to make it a team success around the world. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? GR: I was looking for something that awed people and make it the most eye attractive piece of any living or dining room. Inspirited in the shapes of the first airplanes, it intends to communicate the optimism and the the daring attitude of that time. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? GR: It never comes from an influence of any kind from another furniture, yet it is a fact that I’m a passionate of design and I look very frequently at the best designs in the world, one reason is because I enjoy great design with enthusiasm, and the other reason is because I live in a dynamic world influenced by concepts and fashions that put some floor to all of us, so we can have a certain starting point to build from. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? GR: The target audience for these designs are people who like to live surrounded by art willing to distinguish themselves by their good taste in original designs made by hand. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? GR: The special care in the elaboration of its laminated glass and the choice of exotic wood looking for the perfect balance between beauty and resistance. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? GR: The inspiration came from visiting a museum of old planes and observing the shape of an airplane wing, this silhouette became a sketch that was made in a laminated glass that is the cover of this design. The name "Aero" is inspired in the Greek root "aer" whose meaning is air and is always related to everything that encompasses air transport, so I chose to name my design that way. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? GR: I always start my designs with pencil and paper, as the ideas come up I trace them in my notebook and then my team of designers convert them into 3D in 3DMax, sending the shot to production and that's where the magic happens. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? GR: One of the most outstanding aspects of this design is how to achieve a piece of great beauty and functionality, so not only embellishes the place where it is placed, it´s also useful to store crockery or any personal item that needs to be in the room and used occasionally. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? GR: Yes, with my team of designers. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? GR: Technology is a fundamental role in this design because while making the plans, it allows me to see the details to modify, in order to make the furniture more durable, in addition to giving me a preview of how it would be when finished and to choose the perfect combination of glass and wood. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? GR: All my designs are based on the standard ergonomic measurements to make them comfortable to a wider range of people from all cultures. Also, each design is usually inspired by something i experience and then research is done to produce a better piece of furniture. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? GR: One of the difficulties was to cut the glass without splintering the edges, taking special care not to scratch it as it is a very delicate material, as well as the wood that was used. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? GR: Because it is important that the world knows about Mexican talent, as well as I want to enrich my culture and work by meeting talented people outside of Mexico. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? GR: Each new design ads more experience to the background and also makes you have a better perception of the space and sensibility.
