DESIGN NAME: The Symbiotic Towers
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed Use Development
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the formation of a desert oasis and a voronoi pattern as found in natural systems, the proposal seeks to integrate contextual environmental data into a synthesis of forms, skins, and public spaces. This design sustainable approach aims to minimize sun exposure and to provide a comfortable shaded environment inside. As a result, it reduces the reliance on the prevailing air-conditioning system, and creates a symbiosis between the architecture and the natural environment of Dubai.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A mixed-use development consists of three towers connected on the ground level by a double-deck pedestrian shopping plaza. The lower deck, is a lavish green oasis that is packed with trees and water to provide gathering zones for people during the hot summer season. Towers' geometry and skins were developed in response to Dubai climatic conditions. Radiation data of the hottest seasons in Dubai (May-October) were mapped into the geometry and used to shape the form and orientation of each tower.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project consists of three towers: a Residential, a Hotel, and an Office building. A double deck shopping plaza is also proposed in the first two levels.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design phase started in Nov. 2016 and finished May 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design has been developed using a parametric design techniques to develop the form and the best orientation to minimize the skin sun exposure. These data were re-mapped to generate parametric gradient balconies depth and skin openings. The apartments that are exposed to high radiation will have deeper balconies and smaller skin openings; while the apartments that are exposed to less radiation will have shallower balconies and larger skin openings.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Towers heights vary between 47-58 stories. The Plot dimension is 293m x 574m with a total area of 168,182 sqm. Towers floor plates area vary between 1,800 - 2450 sqm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Intensive research has been conducted to collect the environmental data of Dubai related to temperature and wind direction. These data have been primarily used to derive the design of the plazas and the towers. In the plazas, a micro-climatic condition was created as usable outdoor space throughout the different seasons. Also, these data were used to derive Towers forms with varied balconies depths, and varied skin openings.
CHALLENGE: The research challenge was to use these collected environmental data as references to generate sustainable architectural and urban solutions; thus integrating these contextual environmental data into a synthesis of forms, skins, and public spaces that are tailored to Dubai environment.
