DESIGN NAME: Modern Zen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: Focusing on the relationship between life and art, the project combines the oriental Zen art style with Western modernism, integrating the owner's faith and art collection into life. The simple wood and stone textures, which bring out natural Zen, are combined with a Western rational line structure and functional planning, tracing the contemporary style of Zen thinking.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is to design holiday homes and private guest houses which must function for family life, retain privacy, accommodate VIPs and display artwork in the public spaces. Combining Eastern and Western cultural thinking, with a full open plan design, as well as a large wood and stone texture surface area offering a mansion-style calm atmosphere with a smooth and flexible flow. In consideration of storage, lighting, and color, the art of aesthetics is integrated, such as: thin iron body volume, light focus range, and the light box perspective to enable art and life to become an integral part of the space.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The flow and layout will be divided into two: show gallery and living space by contrasting the color of the floor tiles between dark and light. The flow is designed in parallel line to define the dynamic and static properties which create a timeline between brisk and slow. The hollow cabinet design as an intermediary allows light and vision to penetrate which creates an ambiguous boundary between privacy and openness in the space.
The natural wood/ stone art texture will be installed into the vertical and horizontal modern structure and lines to create a perfect fusion between the oriental Zen art and Western modern framework. To perfectly display the artwork, thin pieces of iron used in the hanging display cabinet show a neat and lightweight design texture. After calculation, the angular misalignment between the grid renders the hue, material, light and shadow angle more delicate.
Light only enters from the front and rear of the house, so an excess partition has been removed in the public space on the first floor, to create a large and open living area; the patio opens up in the middle of the house to allow natural daylight in as the stopping point of the gallery and as the decorative light for the artwork display.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Focusing on the harmony of the contrasting elements between art (openness) and life (privacy), and between the East and the West, the artwork display will be perfectly displayed through the arrangement of the material, hue, light and shadow. The modernist rational structure with horizontal and vertical lines as the main framework is filled with simple and profound structure of wood, stone color, cement stripping etc. emphasized by the natural Zen Buddhist to skillfully blend the cultural artistic thinking of the East and the West.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project focuses on art and life where we perfectly integrate oriental Zen style art and a modern Western framework by installing a natural wood, stone art texture into the vertical and horizontal modern structure and lines. The contrast between the tiles, in light and dark, divides the pattern into two: the display gallery, and the living space with a parallel design of dynamic and static properties, which create a timeline between brisk and slow. The hollow cabinet design as an intermediary allows the light and vision to penetrate which creates an ambiguous boundary between privacy and openness in the space. After calculation, the angular misalignment of the grid makes the angles of color, material and shadow more exquisitely presented.
CHALLENGE: We need to meet the conflicting needs for openness and privacy, at the same time, without sacrificing the sense of space as a precondition and create a large amount of artwork storage showing the aesthetic level of visualization from different perspectives. Another aspect to consider is how to implicitly integrate Eastern and Western elements without a deliberate and abrupt feeling.
