DESIGN NAME: Blow
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tealight Snuffer
INSPIRATION: Boasting a rather prestigious lineage, Blow still retains some of the traits of its illustrious ancestors. From the bas reliefs of the Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes in Athens to the Roman mosaics of Aeolus in Meknes El Menzeh, from Jan Jansson's Map of the Winds to paintings of the Flemish school of the 17th century, from Tiepolo's The Winds at Palazzo Labia to the Victorian maps of the British empire, those puffy cheeks have blustered their way through centuries of visual imagery.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Blow takes an everyday action, such as snuffing out a candle, and turns into a performance. For its small dimensions, it is showy. Like an actor with a diminutive stature and a surprisingly booming voice. There is magic in the genuine surprise when squeezing the rubber bulb and seeing the flame extinguished. It's an instant trigger for playfulness, a return to the spirit of childhood, the barely contained excitement of being handed the controls and the forbidden idea of playing with fire.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A tealight is lit and placed in the holder inside the main ceramic body. When the time comes to blow it out, squeezing the rubber bulb delivers a jet of air which extinguishes the flame.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 and finished in April 2017. Blow was created in Milan as part of the Home Lucky Mascots project for Fuorisalone 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for the project deals with aesthetics and functionality. The object needed a clear visual identity to connect it to various representations of the god of wind throughout the history of art for people to make an instant connection between wind and a candle being blown out. An element of playfulness was added to make it attractive and relevant to our times. The research into the design focused on a shape which would allow the heat not to crack the ceramic and the jet of air to blow the flame out in one single squeeze of the rubber bulb.
CHALLENGE: Lots of energy and time went into the design of the shape and the position of the mouth of the face in relation to the tealight holder so that the object could achieve the functionality it was designed for.
