DESIGN NAME: Taikin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Corporate Identity
INSPIRATION: Taikin means "Fortune" in Japanese, word that is linked to the Tanuki, a Japanese mythological character who represents good fortune among other aspects. Oscar took this character as a main part of the "graphic story" that is told in the restaurant, a story full of illustrations also linked with another “YOKAI” animals as secondary characters.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Taikin is a Japanese and Asian cuisine deluxe restaurant located in the heart of the city of Doral, Florida. Oscar was hired to develop all the graphic elements related to visual identity of the restaurant; meaning branding, and interior design. Taikin means "Fortune" in English, word that is linked to the Tanuki, Oscar took this character as a main part of the "graphic story" that is told in the restaurant, a branding design full of illustrations and details.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The graphic and creative concept of the Restaurant was made to be enjoyed and experienced throughout the process. The story behind Taikin begins to be explained in the menu of the restaurant, information that continues to spread in the chopsticks covers, take out bags, and even in the shirts of the innkeepers, to finally enjoy the complete graphic history when entering the bathrooms, totally covered in graphics that explain the meaning of Tanuki and the mythological stories of this character.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project launched in March 2017 in Miami, Florida.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The entire research process was done through the internet using search platforms, also several visits to the Morikami Museum of Florida were also made, trying to find the most interesting stories of Japanese mythology that have not been used commercially under the same heading. A detailed investigation was made of the Yokai, mythological beings of Japanese culture who have existed for centuries with really interesting stories and with an important impact on their society and culture.
CHALLENGE: The idea started with using the Tanuki as the main character of the restaurant. After a research process, I could observe that the physical characteristics of this character were a bit cartoonish, at the same time the restaurant was destined to have a sober and elegant look due to the consumer's target, that's why I had the need to develop a clean graphic style with a reduced color palette, reinterpreting the Tanuki and its stories with a linear illustration style that merge with the elegance of the place.
