DESIGN NAME: Relativity
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Temporal Clock
INSPIRATION: Albert Einstein has said that when you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it is only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it is two hours. That is relativity. Our feelings directly affect the subjective time, but in our life we always use the objective time which is often inconsistent with our personal experience. Although objective time is more efficient and convenient, we may still imagine how the world would be if we use subjective time as measurement.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Relativity adjusts the user's time perception through a method related to hypnosis. The machine changes its working speed according to the unstable heat of the fire, driving the clock to run at different speed. A series of metal clanking sound and the moving clock hands reset user's time perception and hint a more proper speed of time. Therefore, one can have a preferred sense of time for different scenario.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Relativity is a machine that adjusts the user's time perception through a method related to hypnosis. First, you light a customized candle or spirit lamp for a specific scenario as the energy for the engine of the machine and start the engine. Then, according to the fire source, the engine will work and drive the clock to run at different speed, at the same time making a series of metal clanking sound. The clock and the sound will reset your time perception and hint a more proper speed of time. Therefore, you can have a preferred sense of time for different scenario.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2016 in Taipei and finished in January 2017 in Taipei, and was exhibited in Venue in Taipei in January 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Steel, aluminum, copper, glass and ABS plastic as the materials. CNC and laser cutting for modeling. Stirling engine as the driver of the prototype.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 180 mm x Depth 150 mm x Height 420 mm. Use CNC technology and laser cutting to make the customized parts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Time is a concept that is relevant to us and does not seem to be precisely defined. Einstein used a brief metaphor to explain what relativity is: when you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it is only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it is two hours. Our feelings directly affect the subjective time, but in our life we always use the objective time which is often inconsistent with our personal experience. Although objective time is more efficient and convenient, we may still imagine how the world would be if we use subjective time as measurement.
CHALLENGE: Balancing the fiction and the real parts of Relativity could be the most difficult challenge among all design process. Using a stirling engine as the driver of Relativity is the best way that I though of to give the user a good experience of interaction at the same time preserving a proper space to let the imagination happen.
