| DESIGN NAME: Crooked for You PRIMARY FUNCTION: Album artwork INSPIRATION: I wanted to work with a crooked and surreal landscapes. I got a lot of inspiration from old science fiction illustrations of others worlds. Worlds with landscapes that aren't seen on earth, something special, and at the same time familiar. Another inspiration were all the iconic music artworks. Artworks like " The Dark Side of the Moon" from Pink Floyd or "Unkown Pleasures" from Joy Division. Something that sticks in people heads. Something that become one with the music. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: I had the honor to design the third album artwork for the swiss rock music band "Death by Chocolate". The title "Crooked for you" inspired me to use a metaphor of a perfect sphere, but which is crooked at some parts. The crooked parts of the sphere shows a another kind of beauty to the beholder. So the ability of showing a crooked side of something leads sometimes to another, more intimate kind of beauty. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I wanted to design an artwork which corresponds with the music. I remember how some music artworks had a strong impact on me when i was listening to the music of the artist. I wanted to recreate this feeling. A lot of music artworks these days focus more on the appearance of the musicians and not on the atmosphere of the music. I wanted to use a visual language which completes the music. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the landscape and the sphere I worked with a 3D software. It was a new technology for me to work with, but it also enabled new possibilities. I didn't want this typical 3D look, I wanted something more timeless. So I tried a recreate older styles, but paired with this new technology. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Vinyl: 315 mm x 312 mm x 6 mm CD: 139,5 mm x 128,5 mm x 8 mm TAGS: vinyl, album, music, swiss, cd, artwork, rock, landscape, colorful, planet RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I looked up a lot of older science fiction illustration. I had this vision to work with those surreal landscapes. So I spend a lot of time to get a better understanding of how alien landscapes could look. I had a vague idea of how my crooked world should look, but for quite a long time I didn't find the right visual language. So I had to do a lot of sketches and tests to find the right way to get closer to my vision. CHALLENGE: The hardest thing with this project was to work with a new software. I really wanted to work with a 3D software to build the world and the sphere, but I didn't want this typical 3D look. So I tried a lot to get a more unique and timeless look. NAME: Death by Chocolate PROFILE: Death by Chocolate is a swiss rock music band. They love to play live concerts. More than 120 concerts and the devil only knows how many kilometers - Death by Chocolate travelled a lot the last two years. And they have come a long way. Recording their single Animal Keeper in Nashville with four-times Grammy Award winning producer and engineer Vance Powell was already quite much of a deal. After this first session Vance surprised with the words "Let's do a record". This record, later termed "Crooked For You" was finally made at the famous ICP Studios in Brussels and released in March 2017. |
