DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Savana

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Armchair

INSPIRATION:
A clump of grass, a bush, which moves in the wind and envelops its inhabitant. Made in Wicker, traditional and natural material of the Brazilian furniture, The sensation is of sitting inside a clump, completely enveloped, in an atmosphere of introspection; Almost of reflection. The cushion, made of long synthetic fur in two different tones, refers to the great animals of the African Savannah, who seek in the hot days a shade to protect themselves from the scorching sun.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Savana is an armchair made only by wicker, forming a bush, that shelters the user generating a feeling of welcome and reclusion; ideal for reading a book or relaxing for long hours. Massive and totally handmade, without any use of metal structure or wood, the Wicker branches are curved in the water and then glued one by one, forming the "tree trunk" that serves as the base;

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The idea is that the user can not only seat, but also lie down to relax on the armchair

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2016 in Sao Paulo and finished in January 2017. First exhibited at Paralela show on February 2017 in Sao Paulo.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Savana armchair was made in a family-owned factory in Sao Paulo. The Wicker branches were wet and hand-bent and after drying in the sun, were glued one by one by hand. There are hundreds of branches that together become extremely resistant, eliminating the need for an internal structure. With the exception of the cushion, made from a synthetic fur, the rest of the material is natural.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Wicker / 800 x 800 x 2500 / only for indoor use

TAGS:
savana, armchair, furniture, productdesign, braziliandesign, wicker, nature, confy, cozy

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Although Wicker is a traditional material in Brazilian furniture, our office had never worked with it and our first task was to learn more about the material and its peculiarities. When we came across the material still in nature, planted, we decided to create an armchair that would exactly refer to the bush moving like the wind, just as we had observed in nature. In this way, we use the whole and free branches of any industrialization proc

CHALLENGE:
The greatest difficulty was to position the branches so that the collage work was done, in this case, branch by branch, after being curved in the water and dried in the sun.
