| DESIGN NAME: Daily Headlines PRIMARY FUNCTION: Publication INSPIRATION: As a designer, I struggle to associate the individualism of my work to larger socio-political issues. I feel it’s important to remember we are also participating citizens of the world, so I took my inspiration from world news. Reading the news everyday helped me become more sensitive to world events and to form my own perspective on them, as I tried to express in my typographic designs. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Daily Headlines is a project that re-imagines newspaper design using typographic illustrations. News headlines are sourced each day online and then expressed graphically with typography, latent with subtle commentary. Using the illustrations and the original news article, a printed newspaper was designed out of digital content. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: one color offset on newsprint SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 14" x 22.75" TAGS: publication, newspaper, monochrome, newsprint, typography RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: As this was a personal project and not one set out to solve any problems, one of the most difficult things was to come up with the concept and setting the parameters. Once I had decided to design a typographic piece everyday, the challenge was to commit to that and make sure I was able to capture the essence of the article in graphic expression. NAME: Hui Chen Ou Yang PROFILE: Hui Chen Ou Yang is a multidisciplinary designer currently based in New York. She has spent her life living in various cities: Surabaya, Indonesia; Taipei, Taiwan; San Francisco, U.S.A.; and now New York City. She is interested in social, racial, and environmental issues. Her work has been recognized by the Type Directors Club, Art Directors Club Chinese Young Guns, and the Adobe Design Achievement Awards. She received her BA in Design at the School of Visual Arts, and also holds a BA in English Studies from National Central University, Chungli, Taiwan. |
