DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Mobius Loop

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Headquarter Office

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration of the project is the “Mobius Loop”. The appearance in the shape of “Mobius Loop” and customized planning concept of “Infinite Baidu” not only integrate the core technical concept of “Box Computing” of Baidu perfectly but also represent its very promising future. In the layout in concert with the characteristics of courtyard in North, an 80m-span gallery bridge is connected to a 20,000m2 double-enclosed space of “Baidu Square” and “Baidu World”.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is located in the Zhongguancun Software Park Phase 2. The design merges three plots into two based on the integration of planning conditions. The site planning respects for the Park’s master planning concepts and completed all important street façade. Along the main road, a public plaza is created and it gives Baidu a distinctive entrance. The design introduces the city’s green belt into the site and creates a green courtyard for all kinds of activities. The buildings require the design to reflect concise and simple building style to exhibit the China chic. Fickleness shall be avoided and simple overall design is admired to make it become landmark building. The employees of the enterprise are mainly young people aged 25 on average. So this modern office environment needs to meet the needs of office life of more than 13,000 people for rest, sports and activities.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
1. A Park. A Plaza. An Icon. A Community for 13,000 IT talents Baidu Science and Technology Park, which integrates diversified functions, is a community with complete functions and smooth microcirculations. The internal spaces of buildings consist of two functional parts of external reception and internal service. In the architectural design, we fully consider the application of energy saving and emission reduction, low carbon and other technologies to achieve high efficiency and low operating cost. The plan of the building is conducive to the rapid response to functional changes and transformation. 2. Saving 750,000KWh electricity & Reducing 60K tons of CO2 The courtyard and atrium take advantage of ‘chimney effect’ to improve indoor air flow, which enable passive natural ventilation, energy conservation, environmental protection and comfortableness of buildings. The shape of the building is simple and the shape coefficient is small, and aluminum ribbon windows have been used to replace glass curtain walls, which will do good to heat preservation and energy saving. The aluminum ribbon and roof solar panels can totally save 750,000 kWh of electricity for office buildings on a yearly basis. The reclaimed water system is expected to save RMB 395,000 yuan of water fee and reduce 66,645 tons of carbon emission on a yearly basis. 3. Health = Exercise: 1.2km long Rooftop Jogging Track Reading spaces have been smartly placed on corridors between buildings of the Science and Technology Park. It has got an over 1km long rooftop track on the 32 meters high roof, which’s also the longest rooftop track in China at the moment. It also got the fanciest recreation project in the history of office buildings, three 17m high climbing walls, constant temperature swimming pool, warm and cozy baby care rooms, a 460m2 gym, two laundries, two yoga rooms, three convenience stores, four indoor venues and etc. This human-oriented recreation environment’s one of a kind among headquarters buildings of internet companies in China.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Ancient Beijing city is China’s political, historical and cultural center, which is a symmetrical city. With Forbidden City as center, till the Drum tower, forms an axle wire. Baidu Homeland has reflected the traditional pattern of the city of Beijing. By taking advantage of the street side facing the road, the Baidu Plaza built on the red line of the construction land as the welcome park square of the headquarters park, and with five buildings interconnected through the air corridor, the project perfectly demonstrated the image of its headquarters campus under the condition of project land separated by urban roads. The homeland is composed of 5 buildings and 2 “courtyards” enclosed. The homeland takes axis balanced layout as idea and spatial form of courtyard as basis. With layer-to-layer spatial form, the design has brought Beijing traditional “courtyard house” space experience for Baidu people from all over the world. The building space extends in ‘ribbon shape’ horizontally, and the office space’s thin in depth. All five buildings are 7-storeys high, and have very thin ‘sandwich’ interior structure. In other words, the internal space of each building consists of three parts: left wing, right wing and the central part. All five buildings use ribbon windows since they are ‘thin’. Different spaces of the two wings enjoy natural daylighting and ventilation through ribbon windows. Regardless of your position in the room, there’ll be a window within 8 meters. Moreover, there is a dooryard in the green area among functional rooms, running from top to ground. Such kind of enclosed design echoes with the entirety, signifying the harmonious beauty of Chinese ideas associated with innovation.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The project is located in phase II of Zhongguancun software park in Haidian District, the latest R&D base specially tailored for Baidu. The project land is to Middle street of software park in the north, south street of software park in the south, west road of software in the east and Xibeiwang Town East Road scope in the west, which is convenient for driving. The Xibeiwang Town East Road in west side is the main city road at present and middle street of software park in north side in planning will be the main roads in software park. It is No.13 line of metro with about 3000m in the east from the land. The base is located to the south of central axis of the Park and adjacent to the west entrance. China Satcom Beijing satellite measurement and control center situated in north side is 450m away from base. Building height in base can be controlled to 33.75m. Baidu Building is located in east side of base, with distance of 2.6km. It is convenient for internal contact of company with short distance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Baidu Research & Development Headquarter Beijing is located in the Zhongguancun Software Park Phase 2. The Headquarter complex has 5 buildings in total and they are determined with respect to function, scale, height limit, fire protection, property management and phasing requirements. Buildings take round and smooth end form and connect to each other by bridges to complete an enclosed circulation- a Mobius Loop- symbolizing the endless interaction among people and information.

CHALLENGE:
1. How to reflect local features? The project locates in Beijing, the captain city of China, in the course of design of such a modern business headquarters in the time honored city, the way to fully reflect local features of Beijing and integrate them with design was the first issue that architects confronted with. 2. How to build the image of the business’ headquarters complex on a project land separated by urban roads? The project land consists of 5 plots, including an enclave separated by urban roads. The way to build headquarters buildings on scattered plots and maintain their integrality was the second issue that architects considered. 3. How to build landmark buildings under the 30m height limit? According to urban planning criteria, heights of buildings on project land are limited to less than 30m. Under this height criterion, it’s quite challenging to build landmark buildings. 4. What kind of activity space does the staff need? In an enterprise with an average age of less than 26 years old, with the base of young people the design should meet the needs of young people.
