DESIGN NAME: Tribe Variant
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Womens Wear Collection
INSPIRATION: This collection is inspired by African tribe art. Designer believes that the real inheritance and development of traditional costume needs to combine with modern design elements and techniques of the innovation instead of plump restoration. To seeking a special perspective to express designer’s ideas, the printings of Pablo Picasso and the sculptures of modern cubism are adopted in the whole research journey and entirely reflected in the collection. Transforming different shapes of these elements into the pattern by different technique is the main design direction, therefore the designer chose a strong color contrast and innovative silhouette to present unique visual appeal into this collection.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a fashion graduated collection of master art degree of university of Southampton 2016. It had been launched in London fashion week in September 2016. The inspiration for this project is a juxtaposition which combined African tribal art and modern cubism artwork. The originality of this collection is expressed uniqueness of aesthetics by various techniques. It features mixed up strong graphic prints and ample materials implemented them into the garments reasonable. The designer tried to elaborates Integrity of the series not only involved in the garment, but styling and even the atmosphere of shooting reflecting in this collection.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a collection which combined modern costume aesthetics and content wearable function. For the design, employing different techniques constructed different visual centers of each look so that the diversity of the collection could be formed and the atmosphere of being integral by balancing the fabric and the color could be building. For the silhouette, innovation and Comfort are equally important to this collection. For example, the close-fitting item, designer used printing jersey fabric to fit the body perfectly. For the technique, the blue binding is matched with different kind of black fabric and became the clue to the whole collection. Applying the mask to the photo shoot added the integrity and increased interesting.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is a graduated collection which developed at university of Southampton in the UK. The project started in March 2016 and finished in September 2016 in Winchester, UK. The exhibition has been held at gallery in Winchester campus and the show launching at the vinyl factory during London fashion week 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This collection consisting of 7 looks in total, each look has been managed in many forms of different couture techniques such as printing、embroidery、applique and binding. Designed mesh, jacquard, synthetic leather, organza, Mongolian fur and wool constitute the core of fabrication. In addition, many kinds of different garnish such as fringe, blue feather colorful thread metal zipper are applied in detail.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Firstly, designer researched many Books of Folk costume, African culture, body art to pick up the characteristic which can be apply as the symbolic meaning into the collection. Secondly, the dates of Photograph of art of Picasso and art of modern cubism works are used as references for this project. Finally, the method of performing is related to experiment on digital printing, heat transfer printing, machine embroidery, handmade and machine sewing.
CHALLENGE: Designer tried to push the visual effect to the maximum, while offering uniqueness and function to the wearer. The main difficulty of creating progress are about maintaining the balance for reasonable since such different fabrics, colors and techniques had been used in the collection. The printing color is the other challenge to comfort to the collection. Handmade blue binding and applique are needing time to produce by hand carefully.
