| DESIGN NAME: Terrazzo Times PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table INSPIRATION: The inspiration of “Terrazzo Times” comes from the observation of old house renovations, which architects retain the original structure as the new interior’s materials or support, different from the general modular ways. To present the characteristic of terrazzo floor, which contains both rough and gentle cement and inlaid copper strips like the texture of gorgeous velvets, it depends superiorly on hand-polishing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To reinforce this image, I re-created the building materials into new materials to seal the past time. I chose the techniques of terrazzo to complete as the furniture surface, and the traditional copper strip inlaid on the floor as the support structure. I collected the materials of old houses, and used the techniques of poured terrazzo to form a new matrix except a sharp objects. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To present the characteristic of terrazzo floor, which contains both rough and gentle cement and inlaid copper strips like the texture of gorgeous velvet, it depends superior on hand-polishing. The use of old materials can create the warm and delicate effect of the surface. Some of them even contain the hidden flowing texture. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2015 in Taipei and finished in March 2015 in Taipei, and was exhibited in YODEX in May 2015. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Cement, White cement, Brick powder, Black tiles powder, 1 cent –medium gray gravel, medium cyan 5 cent gravel Bronze, Galvanized iron, Epoxy resin SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Installation: 750 mm x 900 mm x 1100 mm TAGS: furniture, terrazzo, brass, table, home deco, Taiwan RESEARCH ABSTRACT: “Imagine the value beyond the mass-production: build our lives through creativity, not only for the economic purpose.” Through the memories of old house renovations, I took the materials from old buildings such as bricks, tiles, ceramic, gravel as the new stuffs of the furniture. Moreover, I tried to seal the traces of time elapsed. CHALLENGE: Every piece of furniture are required with welding, cementing to complete, taking a full month of time. In addition, while dealing with the details, it is necessary to b e precisely accurate. All those makes the series of furniture a set of precise and perfect art pieces. Special treatment technique gives the characteristics of the cement much tougher. The story of the object itself is the green copper embroider suffusing which shows very amazing color. Through the passing of time, it becomes even more unique and conveys a spiritual temperature. NAME: Shih Chien University PROFILE: Shih Chien University, formerly known as Shih Chien College of Home Economics, was founded in 1958 by Mr. Tung-Min Shieh. The name “Shih Chien,” which in Chinese means “practice”, was originated from the belief of Wang Yangming, a great Chinese philosopher: “Knowledge is the beginning of practice. Doing is the completion of knowing” 1498. Shih Chien University kept this motto in mind while implementing and expanding its educational vision. Over the years, the institution evolved from a junior college to a bachelor’s degree granting institution and was renamed Shih Chien College of Design and Management in 1991. In 1997, the institution was promoted to university status. Today, the University is made up of the College of Human Ecology, the College of Design and the College of Management. The University has one campus in Taipei and another in Kaohsiung and is home to approximately 15,000 students and 700 faculty and staff. |
