HH: Make our world a better life through up-cycle design

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
HH: The series present simple lines and rich colors, which seem to inclusive all the fleeting time and years, with a very tremendous moment. Each original object has its own flavor and personality, and will transform to another in every step of the making process.I aim to enable the terrazzo to show different expressions in the furniture, and try to add a little bit distinctive personality into it. The balance of Mother Nature has her own logic and reason and we continue to recognize her wisdom.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
HH: I'd like to create a series of collection

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
HH: Every piece of furniture are required with welding, cementing to complete, taking a full month of time.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
HH: “Imagine the value beyond the mass-production: build our lives through creativity, not only for the economic purpose.” Through the memories of old house renovations, I took the materials from old buildings such as bricks, tiles, ceramic, gravel as the new stuffs of the furniture. Moreover, I tried to seal the traces of time elapsed.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
HH: No, but I will produce my work by myself only.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
HH: Because I try to lead a trend of up-cycle design, make people more conscious of consumer no-waste objects.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
HH: No.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
HH: Average users

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
HH: The inspiration of “XANG XIA” comes from the observation of old house renovations, which architects retain the original structure as the new interior’s materials or support, different from the general modular ways. To reinforce this image, I re-created the building materials into new materials to seal the past time. I chose the techniques of terrazzo to complete as the furniture surface, and the traditional copper strip inlaid on the floor as the support structure. I collected the materials of old houses, and used the techniques of poured terrazzo to form a new matrix except a sharp objects.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
HH: “XANG XIA” a bridge to connect the preceding and the following

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HH: all by hands

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
HH: To present the characteristic of terrazzo floor, which contains both rough and gentle cement and inlaid copper strips like the texture of gorgeous velvet, it depends superior on hand-polishing. The use of old materials can create the warm and delicate effect of the surface. Some of them even contain the hidden flowing texture.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
HH: No one.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
HH: traditional craft of terrazzo

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
HH: traditional craft of terrazzo

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HH: In addition, while dealing with the details, it is necessary to b e precisely accurate. All those makes the series of furniture a set of precise and perfect art pieces. Special treatment technique gives the characteristics of the cement much tougher. The story of the object itself is the green copper embroider suffusing which shows very amazing color. Through the passing of time, it becomes even more unique and conveys a spiritual temperature.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
HH: Make people aware of the environment.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
HH: The balance of Mother Nature has her own logic and reason and we continue to recognize her wisdom.
