DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: MedVie
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Health Care
INSPIRATION: The project was inspired by two "wings" that open to the corner seeking to be a space for the community and embracing your surroundings as well as the user.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The entire complex is arranged along a central axis diagonally to the corner. This axis, in addition to organizing the spaces, also directs people to the interior of the building and its large central lobby where shops, cafes, clinics and a day hospital are integrated in a wide space bathed by natural light. This pleasant space ends up "oxygenating" the user experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Brazilian people generally have a perception of medical buildings as cold spaces with negative connotations. In addition, because the patient is fragile due to their physical or mental situation, experience in these spaces often becomes unpleasant. So MedVie Medical Center seeks to change that perception by humanizing a complex and technologically advanced building with an attractive, accessible and supportive concept, creating a positive space capable of acting as a center of social activity, not just a medical center, and providing a welcoming environment for patients and healthcare professionals.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The MedVie project is located in the city of Caxias do Sul, in the extreme South of Brazil. The architectural project is going to be completed in 2017 and the deadline of construction is in 2021.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Medvie architectural project was carried out on the BIM platform, where all the volume was tested, as well as the compatibility with the other complementary projects. In addition, a physical model of 9.00 m was built for the sales stand.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The structural system of the project is in reinforced concrete. Its outer shell will be composed of high performance glasses, composite aluminum panels, and sandstone cladding from the region at the base of the building. The total area of the project is 3,0541,45 m² spread over 12 floors, with 244 medical offices, 18 single-story shops and 444 parking spaces.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A survey was conducted with the target public of medical professionals and patients about the needs and expectations of future users of the medical center, where a great desire was identified for the creation of a pleasant and peaceful not-like hospital environment.
In order to reach this objective, a smaller volume for the building was chosen, near the human scale, and environments bathed by natural light and integrated with green areas.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in the development of the project was to create an environment that was not cold and technological, for an extremely complex program that would break the paradigm of the traditional health complexes in Brazil.

I am absolutely inspired by MedVie, Alberto Torres's award-winning work in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award. MedVie is a truly unique health care complex that was carefully crafted to create a pleasant, peaceful and not-like hospital environment. The central axis that organizes the spaces and directs people to the interior of the building and its large central lobby is both aesthetically pleasing and efficient. The project was inspired by two “wings” that open to the corner, seeking to be a space for the community and embracing its surroundings as well as the user. With the survey conducted with the target public of medical professionals and patients, the project was able to provide an environment that is not cold and technological. The biggest challenge in its development was to create such an environment for an extremely complex program. The Medvie architectural project was realized on the BIM platform, where all the volume was tested and a physical model of 9.00 m was built for the sales stand. This is truly a remarkable work that is a great example of good design and deserves to be celebrated.

As a design enthusiast, I am in awe of the creative and innovative approach taken to designing this health care facility. The central axis is not only cleverly arranged to organize the spaces, but it also creates a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for visitors. The integration of shops, cafes, clinics and a day hospital within a single, large lobby bathed in natural light is simply brilliant and makes for an incredibly enjoyable user experience. This work is a testament to the dedication and skill of the designer and is certainly worthy of the A' Design Award.

This award-winning work is an inspiring example of a modern architecture, building and structure design that successfully integrates a wide variety of spaces, including shops, cafes, clinics and a day hospital all along a central axis. This creates an environment that is pleasant and peaceful, far from the traditional hospital environment. The use of natural light and green areas, combined with the smaller scale of the building, have achieved the desired result. It is an impressive accomplishment and a great example of design innovation.
