DESIGN NAME: Fun Paradise
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multiple academic functions
INSPIRATION: My first occupation was teaching. Later, I became a designer. After many years of design practice, I began to explore those things that could bring to me the peacefulness and real joy of life beyond the typical design business. Including, for example, the reflection on the innovative implementing model combining design with education. I am inspired by the play of geometry, toy bricks and the traditional house roof of the local ethnic Yi people, and work on fusing the colorful acrylic house with the cultural symbol of colorful Yunnan into an interactive space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design starts from the characteristics of perception and mentality of schoolchildren to construct A house within a house, or a space within a space. The Zhuoyu Pavilion is an innovative project. It combines design with education, intending to build an additional third space beyond the typical classroom and playground for the countryside children to engage in computer access, reading, communication and other interesting interactive activities. The project is attempt to improve rural education and leads the children in low-income areas to a hopeful future.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Zhuoyu Pavilion is an innovative project. The project is attempt to improve rural education and leads the children in low-income areas to a hopeful future.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 and finished in March 2017 in Yunnan.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design applies the traditional house roof form of the local ethnic Yi people to the new building. The undulated facade profile and the roof of warm colorful coated steel sheets produce a strong sense of modernity. In addition, the whole building is made of water-proof and earthquake resistance materials and the entire structure adopts the steel structure. The design adopts nip glue coated glass for best daylight effects, and put durable and environmental friendly pine wood on the interior wall, All these details work together for creating a safe active space for the children.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The design creates a series of open spaces, composing a fun paradise for children study in the remote mountainous area: the sunken but quiet area is for reading; the main ground area is for accessing internet, participating in communication and stage performance; the upper floor is for drawing, free play and an audience area for viewing a performance. The project divides the dynamic and quiet academic functions through varied spatial characteristics but also seeks to integrate them through interactive visual exchanges within a unified space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In November 2015, I visited four elementary schools in Yunnan Province, where the local children had very little communication with the outside world. Since then, how to build a unique space design to construct a real bridge for connecting the past, present, and future along the temporal axis, and provide the kids a constructive and interesting educational space has been my primary design objective. The proposed conception of The third space is an innovative model combining design with education and opens a new perspective based on our thinking and feasibility study.
CHALLENGE: During the construction of the project, due to the lack of local professional construction teams, there emerged many construction difficulties. The project also encountered numerous problems related to the site survey, water proofing, and earthquake resistance. Through close communication and cooperation among the Creative-Space Design team, the local architectural design institute, and other related design units of structure and electromechanical systems, the safety and construction progress of the overall project were fully guaranteed.
