INSPIRATION: Mandala have obtained a reputation in Western society since the 20th century. It is worth being aware that there exist canards or ambiguous impressions, which can impede audiences from the correct comprehension of these artworks.
My design arose in response to the three key problems. Incorrect information about mandalas being circulated in the commercial market, esoteric knowledge of mandalas, and the persistence of a Western point of view in relation to mandalas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My project seeks to provide a more secular, accessible and contemporary transitional medium. As an imagery interpretation of the Kalachakra mandala, it is aimed to developing a way of reading Tibetan art according to existing cultural.
The Kalachakra mandala is an epitomised reflection of the cosmos, which in Tibetan culture is mainly embodied through the symbols of the five elements. In this way, the superiority of the five elements as an interpretive vehicle is confirmed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The printed posters can be employed as framed or hanging screens, such as apply in yoga centres or mediation spaces, or scale down into postcards, bookmarks, mobile phone shells and so on. In this way, secular publics are able to access the concept of the five elements, the Tibetan mandala, also find some universal notions shared between the eastern and the western nations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This graphic project is designed to interpretate the Kalachacra mandala. Innovative methodology is created including four steps. Identification, Contextualisation, Translation and Explication. Its research is mainly through academic books and journals from libraries, online resources and museum. I experimented with different styles, figures and positions of relevant symbols, match and arrange them in several ways. The outcomes contribute new method of understanding mandala, it also provides a train of thought on decoding Tibetan Buddhism symbols.
CHALLENGE: The challenges are mainly focus on building connections between religious and non-religious mind, western and eastern understanding, historical and contemporary aesthetic, realistic world and the ideal world. Especially the Tibetan symbols and motifs, it is needed to remain their recognisability, but meanwhile create unique, sacred and meaningful representations. Most connections require a graphic way to be achieved, and ensure the final outcomes are able to interpret the Kalachacra mandala effectively.
