PRIMARY FUNCTION: Boutique Hotel
INSPIRATION: Hutong is one of key components within context of Beijing city. As an important cultural figure, it reflects Chinese cultural heritage and social classes.
In small irregular court yards, we are searching for new dwelling possibilities. By adopting valley, front yard and ground floor of entrance gateway into recreation sequences and restructuring center court yard as double atrium space, we can reconnect new hutong spatial structure include reception, underground public space and center court yard with resident units attached.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In order to maximize both indoor and outdoor public spaces, and maintain the idea of mixature life style of Hutong, the lifted bridge room is debut. The basement is built previously by owner, is now an atrium with skylight, and programed as a welcoming indoor multi-purposed public space. The guest houses not only provide accommodations but also places for visitors to experience ancient Chinese culture. If the rooftop terrace and the basement express yi and yan, then the lifted bridge room and all guest houses would represents the world.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In a traditional courtyard, this small element is not only opened up the existing basement also connected to the history of the place itself. The insertion of new building elements seems to extend the structure and formal logic of existing buildings, but also reconstructs its framework using highly contrasted and consistent abstract modern concepts. It not only connects the internal and external space, but also links the new and old, public and private space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project starts in the end of 2015 and ends at August of 2016. The opening for the hostel is August 15 in 2016. It located on 35 BaBaoKeng Hutong, Dongcheng Dist., Beijing, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The new glazing component of center piece that plugged into center court yard continues existing structures and formal logics. It shows comparison in-between historical and modern legacy. High-contrast and unitary expression redefine court yard. Inside the court yard, glances and structure-framing appearances not only reconnect inner and outer field, but also link new and old, public and private territories. As result, the ultimate goal is to provide lodges not only for staying overnight but also for experience of China/ Beijing hutong culture, living customs and create dialogue in-between historical and modern era.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Within the context of historic and political area, we try to install new functions which introduce new kinds of life style that allow visitors to rest and experience ancient part of modern China.
Existing blocks have been adapted and transformed more than hundreds of years. The new intervention is to deconstruct and reassemble current contexts on site. This allows us to install designative functions and test different kind of life style in Hutong area.
CHALLENGE: Instead of creating formal proposal, the challenge is to formalize the experiment of possibilities of life within context of ancient Chinese culture.
The construction method and details were modified and re-adopted to local construction skill.
