RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main area of research for Canela was in relation to its dimensions in order to achieve the greatest degree of comfort. Various angles were contemplated for a range of seating positions before selecting what was considered to be the optimum setup. From there a number of mock ups were created and tweaked before creating a full size prototype preceding the final model.
CHALLENGE: The joinery posed a slight challenge in that it was a requirement to maintain a delicate structure in order to achieve a light and minimal appearance. A combination of finger joints and wedged mortise and tenons were used, these not only provided Canela with a rigid and highly resistant structure but they are also interesting and attractive details in themselves.
