Interview with Knót Artesanal at Sunday 29th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KH: We wanted to create a comfortable armchair with simple clean lines and a 'light' appearance. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KH: It took a while overall, coming up with the basic design was in this instance the quicker part of the process which isn't usually the case for us. It took a while however and a couple of prototypes before we were completely happy with the angles and dimensions from a comfort perspective. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KH: We ourselves decided to pursue this project which is part of our Canela range of seating which includes the Canela for Two bench and Canelinha dining chair. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KH: Production for us is just as important as design, we are us much furniture makers as we are designers and so far every piece we've produced from the initial idea though the construction to the finishes has been done by us alone. Having said given the right conditions for leasing or selling the design it is an option that we would certainly consider. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? KH: The use of copper in the backrest, the shape of the components and the type of joinery are somewhat unique features which are consistent among our Canela seating range FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? KH: Canela has a number of meanings in Portuguese, one of which is shin and the form of Canela's legs of resembles that of the shin bone. It also means cinnamon and is also a beautiful species of wood, so in Portuguese there are a number of connotations that spring to mind when you hear the name, aside from the sound of the word which itself is pleasant. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? KH: We contracted an upholster for the cushions who did a great job in matching all the angles, especially in the rear of the seating cushion which slots into the structure of the frame. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KH: This design as with all of our designs is a combination of a modern design process combined with a traditional construction techniques. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? KH: We both felt that it was something worthy to be submitted and worthy of recognition.
