DESIGN NAME: Riut Bag Crush
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Safe urban daypack
INSPIRATION: I am a backpack user, traveller and commuter. I believe we can change the design of everyday objects - like the RiutBag - to allow travellers and commuters to adapt to city life in 2017. For urban design, I believe that means putting security first for travellers.
The old backpack design - with zips on the outside - increases the chance of theft, stress and suspicion for travellers and commuters in busy cities. RiutBags allow us to think differently, love our cities, and enjoy peace of mind anywhere in the world.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: RiutBag Crush has two unique features: 1) Security: Like all RiutBags, it is backwards. The person behind you cannot open it - all the zips are against your back. 2) Super light: It is so light - under 250grams - that it can crush down into an internal pocket. These two features make the RiutBag Crush a secure and light backpack for enjoying urban travel, at home and abroad.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: RiutBag Crush is a light weight backpack. You wear it on your back. When you put it on, all the zips and openings are against your back. When it is not in use, RiutBag Crush folds away inside an internal pocket for easy storage. RiutBag Crush has 10 litres of space when fully opened. On the outside it is dark urban colours. On this inside it is bright yellow to help the RiutBag user find their belongings easily.
There is an important D-pocket at RiutBag Crush's base of the back panel. This pocket has two functions: 1) When the RiutBag Crush is folded up, it fits in this pocket when turned inside out. 2) When the RiutBag Crush is being used a backpack, the D-pocket allows you to easily access and stow important items like phones and passports without removing the RiutBag from your back.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first RiutBag Crush prototype was created in summer 2016. RiutBag users give feedback to me through feedback surveys. They said, whilst in Thailand, they had their wallet stolen from their normal backpack. They wish they'd had a light daypack which was "backwards" with no outer zips on their travels through Asia. This has been repeated by many RiutBag users.
After three prototypes, I started the production in January 2017 and it is on track to ship 24 May 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Riut stands for Revolution in user thinking. I collect feedback and thinking from urban travellers, commuters and RiutBag users to ask: what is urban travel like for you in 2017? They tell me what they love, what they hate, the problems they wish could be solved and I build RiutBags to solve their problems.
The impact of my design philosophy: I evolve and develop RiutBags every production built on user feedback. The RiutBags change to meet the challenges of urban travel problems today and, hopefully, tomorrow.
I aim to build a revolution of RiutBag users who feel calm, confident and stress-free in our busy cities. I believe that when they feel more secure, they will be more open to others, seeing the good in them and not the bad, feeling open and not suspicious and - of course - that they will not be impacted by theft or loss of belongings.
CHALLENGE: I am a one-person design and manufacture business. When I look at the data in my surveys to see the problems travellers face, I try to create new solutions to the problems I see. Every time I create a new product, it is a large financial risk. However, I believe that real experimentation to try to solve new problems is worth this risk! My RiutBag users seem to agree too.
