DESIGN NAME: Feather Earring
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earring
INSPIRATION: In feather earring I have described metamorphosis by using unrelated substances. The pearl in the form of an egg is the begining. It then transformed into a silver body as if it is a caterpillar. At the end, a completely unrelated material (feather) came out. The design also represented a journey up to freedom. The feather was born out of silver holes declerating that transfiguration is completed.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The connection between the earcuff and the ear is designed distinctly. The pearl located on the backward served as the fixing point of the earring to the auricle. This pinless earring is designed for one ear use. Women without ear pinhole can successfully use this earring. Another advantage that it is very simple to wear this earcuff.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Three distinct materials are used to symbolize metamorphic bodies. In this design the front pearl at the tip of the silver arc is the begining of the metamorphosis and arc form is used to represent the metamorphic pathway. The feather which came out of the silver holes symbolizes the end of transfiguration process.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started 7 october 2016 and finished 30 january 2017 in Istanbul

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea of metamorphosis came from the stories of Greek mythology which I used in some of my other jewelry designs. We can see the examples of transforming bodies when we look closer to these myth stories, in example; Cronus cuts down his father's testicles and throws them into the sea.The sea is inseminated and Aphrodite is born out of the sea. This kind of change also takes places in nature, butterflies go through a life cycle known as metamorphosis. With these inspirations, I used different materials in a tranforming pathway, beginning with a pearl and ending in feather.
CHALLENGE: It was hard to define metamorphosis which is a well known abstract concept as a physical design. It was hard to decide which substances to choose and how to relate them in order to built a transforming pathway.
