Interview with Ece Cokca at Wednesday 12th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? EC: The main idea of this earring was to describe to pathway with different materials in which each one evolved into another. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? EC: I've designed a jewelry using completely different materials, each representing another level of metamorphosis. During the design process I was anxious about its aesthetic look and easy to use form. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? EC: I would like to design jewelry that tells people a story, it's not only a jewelry but it's something more when it has a story. With this award winning design I'd like to intoduce Stelart (storytellingart) jewelry into the taste of people with lots of stories along with the jewelry. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? EC: It took about two months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? EC: Metamorphosis takes place in life but we can not follow the whole process since it is a matter of time. We can just see the seperate metamophic forms as it is in the life cycle of a butterfly. When you look to a butterfly, you can not easily imagine it was once a caterpiller. Many mythological stories are also based on metamorphic transformations. So the idea of changing materials in a jewerly form attracted me. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? EC: I intend to produce and sell my work by myself under my brand name Stelart Jewelry FS: What made you design this particular type of work? EC: To gather different kinds of materials in the same object in the form of a jewelry made me design this particular type of work FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? EC: Not for this particular design FS: Who is the target customer for his design? EC: Women who have style and likes to wear extraordinary designs, and who are interested in jewelry that has a story. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? EC: This earring is desinged as an earcuff in which different materials are used to form the concept. It is easy to wear and is distinct with its original story. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? EC: Metamorphosis may be defined as the ability to change shape or form. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? EC: I used mostly saw cutting, silversmithing, polishing techniques to build up this earring. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? EC: The most unique aspect of the design is the harmony of the concept with the form and materials of the jewelry. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? EC: I've both designed and made the jewelry by myself. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? EC: This is a handmade jewelry so I didn't use any technology. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? EC: I read about the different aspects of my concept including mythological stories and the 'Metamophosis' written by Kafka. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? EC: It was hard to decide which substances to choose and how to relate them in order to built a metamorphic pathway. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? EC: I liked to my concept jewelry to meet people by such an international design competition FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? EC: During the design process I have learned how to overcome the challenges and how to give birth to a concept in the form of a jewelry. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? EC: Thank you very much
