Bengal Classical Music Festival

INSPIRATION:
The essence of music allows the soul to disintegrate and transcend to a higher state of being. Eastern classical music is a conversation of love spoken in syllables of purity and reflection. The concept was to visually showcase the unraveling of the soul, pierced by the powerful, uplifting and euphoric waves of music as the lover and the beloved becomes one.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Eastern classical music is a conversation of love spoken in syllables of purity and reflection. To encapsulate this, a generative system based on 'Raga' was developed. A symbol – the statue of a musician sitting at peace, her hands liberating the tunes from her Tanpura – was chosen as the core seed of the system to generate design elements unique to each performer's music. The lighting of the statue for each generations reflected the different times of the day-night when a 'Raga' is played.

Bengal classical music festival is the largest eastern classical music festival in the world. The festival takes place every winter in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This particular identity was launched in 2015 and is currently in use.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We 3d scanned the original version of the statue and virtualised it to be used in a custom generative system. We included a data bank of 378 Ragas inside the system. The database included - time of the day-night when a particular raga should be played, musical notes of the Raga and the interval sequences. The system had a list of classical music performers and a list of their tracks. Selected music track went through FFT conversion and the converted data-points were used to manipulate the 3D shape of the statue. The light direction was decided based on time of the day-night the raga of the selected music was played.

Bengal Foundation was set up on the belief that exposure to the arts and culture lend a certain enlightenment and erudition to people, which not only make their quality of life better but also contribute to the betterment of society as well as the country.
