DESIGN NAME: Occhiataccia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ritual kit
INSPIRATION: Malocchio literally means an eye throwing evil, and it is an ancestral popular tradition widespread in different cultural areas. This superstition is strongly believed end deeply rooted in my birthplace, Molise.
As a little girl, I used to see my grandmother performing the ritual against the malocchio, I grew in contact with it and it was the source of inspiration to develop such a project.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Occhiataccia is a tool kit to drive away bad luck and it is composed by 5 white and simple elements, only characterized by graphic signs that guide the user. The packaging is also part of this project, based on the Bla Bla Bla texture, representing the sound produced by scandalmongering people. In the box, an equation-looking illustration explains how to perform the talismanic ritual.
The box contains a plate, a cruet, a small glass, scissors and a dishcloth, essential elements to perform the ritual.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The ritual performed in Molise to ward off the curse is composed by a sequence of movements and words, transmitted within the family only during Christmas Eve.
Some drops of olive oil are spilled in a plate full of water: if they split apart and tend to disappear, the person is cursed, otherwise, if the oil tend to form a single big drop, no magical danger in in view.
All these five elements are crucial to perform the ritual and the equation shows every single passage.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2013 in Florence and Campobasso and finished in April 2014.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I decided to develop an item whose function is linked to my homeland, since it is a region whose cultural value is often underestimated even by its inhabitants.
Moreover, I chose the Malocchio tradition because it is a ritual that I feel familiar with, since my grandmother explained it to me when I was a child.
Finally, this work’s aim is to promote, in a creative and modern way, traditions from the past often unknown by the youngsters and risk to be forgotten.
CHALLENGE: After a research on the varied intangible heritage of rituals and traditional festivals, the biggest challenge has been to represent intangible cultures and customs, with materials and usable objects trying to catch the interest or curiosity of everyone.
