DESIGN NAME: A ChristmaSpiral
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Christmas Tree
INSPIRATION: As many people I try every year to develop new decorative motifs to adorn my house during the Christmas festivities. Christmas is in my DNA, so I tried to apply this feeling in a design concept, using as inspiration the spiral shape of the organic polymer that each of us possesses in a unique way. Even the choice of material is not accidental: the wood transmits fact more than any other single sensation of heat.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With this project I tried to reinterpret the classic Christmas tree through the use of innovative forms and materials. The verticality of the design is enhanced by the spiral that consists of individual elements in wood, supported by an iron pole that is inserted in the support base, also made of wood. This also forms the box in which the shaft is placed in the period of non-use, that is one of the design peculiarities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I have developed the design trying to get an object that was easy to assemble for everyone, so i have identified the following assembly steps:
1. Unboxing through the removal of the screw-element placed on the box top;
2. Removal of the box cover;
3. Unboxing of the parts;
4. Intallation of the screw-element on the pin placed on the bottom of the box;
5. Assembling and installation of the support pole;
6. Replacing the box cover;
7. Installation of the wood elements on the pole;
8. Rotation of the wood elements;
9. Installation of the lights;
10. Pass the power cord through the hole provided.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2016 and finished in January 2017 in Uzzano, a little town near Lucca, Italy.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design originates from a practice experimentation that lasted several months, I studied different processing mode using some recycled pallet,and the processing and finishing of the wood, in addition to test the outside resistance in all weather conditions. At the same time I tested several arrangements of the woodwork in order to find the design that best respond to the conceptual idea.
CHALLENGE: The most complex part of the project development is derived from the desire to create a box that will not only be confined to be a tree box, but rather that become a fundamental component of the design. In this regard, the development of the iron screw-element has been decisive, because it works both as a closing element of the box both as the fixing element of supporting pole; all parts made of iron are hidden from view in order to obtain a total-wood effect.
