DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Picglaze Sample Book

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Catalogue of materials, sample book

INSPIRATION:
Designers achieved to create a volume illustration or photography, composed by different layers that create a landscape or new picture in the composed form. Inspired in futurism illustrated posters for the illustration and films for the face composed.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Picglaze asked Estudio Maba to make a sample model of their product for their customers, the first thing they thought was that we should design a piece that people would like to have. Something that could be shown by itself and be decorative at the same time. The strongest point of the product is its appearance, how it feels, the first impression when you see it. We should take advantage of these qualities and show them right from the start. Nothing like briefcases or boxes with pieces of material, nor a succession of printed photographs to represent a collection. Picglaze prints photos, but finishes them with something out of the ordinary. They print on versatile and different materials, with the rigidity of the formats as a main element. The challenge was to make the most of these qualities. Since the materials are rigid they can be sustained and form a composition. As such a sculpture with different colors and thicknesses. The final design, or rather the designs, since the sizes and formats of the sample tends to an infinity, it is a vertical composition with different levels, different artwork and illustrations, which are placed in layers, cut out differently making themselves a new picture or photo.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Customer can access to different possibilities for their printings by touching the elements themselves.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
From January 2016 to April 2016. The design includes different collections for illustrations and photography.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Photography professionals use this display to show clients the wide range of materials where they can print their photos. The piece is a decorative object that looks pretty on the point of sale of any photographer's studio. This is a plus of usability and experience. It is easy to choose this display over its competitors. It stands out, as others work in more conventional and rigid formats.

CHALLENGE:
We have used eight different materials in this design: MDF (35 mm) PVC (3 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm, 19 mm) Sandwich panel, Dibond (3 mm) PMMA, Plexiglas (3 mm) A framed PVC piece (35 mm) The main challenge when designing this was to prepare the pieces in a base made of the same materials and able to sustain the whole display. This way, the client can produce their own displays, without having to outsource them. One of the materials had a fixed size. It was a 126 mm × 126 mm square that we should not alter, it had to support and integrate the whole construction. That particular adaptation was one of the hardest problems to solve.

NAME:
Picglaze

PROFILE:
PICGLAZE AMPLIFIES PERCEPTIONS OF VOLUME, COLOUR, CLARITY AND LUMINOSITY, GENERATING A PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN SENSATION OF PERFECTION. A NEW CATEGORY OF PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING HAS ARISEN FROM THIS TECHNOLOGY. AFTER THE TRADITIONAL OPTIONS OF ‘MATTE’, ‘SATIN’ AND ‘GLOSS’: THE ‘GLAZE’ PRINT. The result is a crystal-clear, flexible and extraordinarily brilliant image that generates three principal sensations: - The feel of a crystal-clear image. - A certain three-dimensional character. - The effect of something having its own light. These three new attributes transcend the current concept of photography to make way for a new category of printing, following on from the ‘matte’, ‘satin’ and ‘gloss’ options. Meet ‘glaze’, the extraordinary finish that sharpens image quality to an incredible extent, also mitigating the visual defects of distortion and reflection cause by other traditional solutions, such as glass or perspex. For the same reason, ‘glaze’ printing does not require lighting to highlight the image, unlike retro illuminated elements, that substantially raise final production costs without achieving our product’s sense of perfection and naturalism, since the new system manages to ‘bring each piece to life’ independent of the surrounding light environment. In this way, HDPB system technology reduces any visual defects of the image itself or that are produced by digital printing, increasing the quality of the final photograph.
