DESIGN NAME: Mt. Jiri Goroshe Wine and Beer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bar
INSPIRATION: My inspirations were inherited from my clients. They wanted a bar in a mountain to sell and promote their Korean liquor to day and night visitors. They have a passion to climb up 1400m of snowy mountain, to extract sap from Goroshe tree to get beneficial mineral added water for the liquor. Also they never fought against the environment. Their method was pure eco-friendly and traditional. I tried to visualize their passion and eco-friendly concept to the design by maximizing the harmony.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This conceptual bar is situated in valley of mt. Jiri. I wanted to arouse positive impressions about the product(liquor) to visitors by showing two harmonies in the design.
1)Modern and Tradition: Modern bar is filled with traditional objet like Korean lightings. Visualizing coexistence of past and present.
2)Nature and Architecture: The building's shape and color resembles the mountain to blend in to the nature. Also big windows are intended to capture the panoramic view of the mountain.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Including Entrance, bar and encountering area is for visitor greeting and product introducing. This area is not fully opened to mountain so visitors can focus more on the products. There are down steps when you head to the other part. View of the mountain is wider from the down steps. Sightseeing and tasting is main purpose here. You can easily walk out through side door and enjoy.
This building has 3 doors. One is the main entrance. This is located in center and opened to everyone. Second one is near the bar for workers to access to buried jars (liquor ages in the jars). The third one is facing the mountain which is the best view of this building. All the doors are opened in good weather and work with circulation of air. Great air condition is the best reason people visit this mountain. This bar is right next to tea tasting center and small hotel. Visitors are always there all year around. Shared bathroom building is outside near the building.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 and finished in February 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: First challenge was the form of the building. It’s not vertical and regular. Some places had angles and looked like having lack of space. So, I put mirrors on the wall and ceiling to give more spacious look. Also, big windows were difficult part. As this bar is open from day to night natural light environment was hard to match. So, I made the concept to make it looks like a café during the day and a bar during the night. Colors were also selected to match dark and bright. Last difficulty I want to mention is balancing between old and new. I didn’t want to mix it but put them together in a balanced way. Furniture, Jars and small lightings are here and there and made traditional outlook. Shape of building, Neon lights and bar type structure made modern feeling. Every challenge was fun and creating new style made the work more unique.
