DESIGN NAME: Lagos's Wooden Tower
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Building
INSPIRATION: The context is the first resource in architecture for me. We need to know, for whom we built, what we built and why we built it, it is important before beginning the first sketch of a project.
Briefly, in Lagos, Yoruba is very present; this is a major Yoruba city in Nigeria. There is also a growing massive presence of Hausa and other cultures. But the history of Yoruba here is ancient and the project his to tell this old story through a landmark or a building monument. Architecture can be solving several aspects at the same time. The envelope high lights Yoruba culture in the heart of Lagos. Inspiration comes from the history of Edo, Yoruba and Hausa people. Lagos is the oldest site of Benin Empire and it is awesome to see that there is always a traditional hierarchy in this modern city. Obe yet symbolises the king of the man, the king of Lagos state. We especially used symbols which refer to freedom, emancipation and patronage. Traditionally, it is important to mention; Yoruba dwelling is built along a large courtyard and sometimes a secondary. These courtyards have a function to bring light and helped to collect rainwater for household usage. The perfect shape or form of their architecture is a rectangle or square, the function was basic, living, Cooking and Sleeping. By the shape, forms, Program, and integrated sky gardens, greenery, terraces and layers; our project is entire influence by the sense and the definition of a residential building by Yoruba. But there are some evolutions; courtyards have replaced by greenery, facilities and gathering floors between the three blocks. But the cultural of the project mind is achieved.

This tower is influenced by the contest ‘they don’t fuck it’, but it wants to be integrated into the city life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lagos is the most populate city in Africa and represents a big deal for architects. City consists of 16 million inhabitants. Situated in the heart of Ikory, the most popular and the richest residential site of Nigeria, Lagos’s tower is the unique wooden structure which is designed to be a smart and sustainable building.
Lagos’s tower rises above the town and follow the sky and search to cross the limit of wooden construction. The new landmark is composed of mixed residential type used.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Lagos is the most populate city in Africa and represents a big deal for architects. City consists of 16 million inhabitants. Situated in the heart of Ikory, the most popular residential site of Nigeria, this tower is the unique wooden structure which is designed to be a smart and sustainable building. The new landmark is composed of mixed residential type used; it is built on the roof of Abebe Court, a housing estate. The entire structure is built by using resistance of LVL wood system.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is a proposal for an international competition launch by Metsä Wood in 2016. The Design has been short-listed and It is located in Lagos (Nigeria). Lagos’s Wooden Tower, this project, we made it in Lagos firstly to respond to specific context and finally to initiate a new architectural challenge into African Architecture Community. It is important to understand that the aim of the competition ‘Plan B: The city above the city: Was to imagine how the roofs of today can be transformed into the plots of tomorrow?’ At this time, the big ideas for us, was to create a new generation of the city above the existing with a new type of building.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The entire structure is built by using resistance of LVL wood system. It is used as a load-bearing and a non-load bearing structure. Structural feasibility and sustainability are based on wood. LVL products allow crossing very far-reaching.
Shortly, in this project, wood is not only important for its structural properties. Wood is important for its aesthetic, its cultural impact; importance, usability and influence in every day’s life routine. It is also a sensible, warm and soothing material.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The first was to work about the evolution of urbanisation and population growing by creating a new form of urban fabric.
What is the future of this kind of city in Africa?
The first stage was what king of existing building is appropriated to receive an extension above? The main area of reflection was to extend the city of Lagos in height with a wooden building. The second action was to understand the big and awesome cultural diversity in lagos. The final step was focus on our architectural contribution by bringing a wood building into a landscape dominated by concrete buildings.
CHALLENGE: The challence about this project is "how to build a new city on an existing layer". Our Work focus about the reinvention of a new urban fabric, with sustainable wood building. The main question is " how to create a city above a city" or "how to used the potential of flat roof and top roof for our future city". The special complexity of the project was to study the existing layer and to bring a new approach
