Multifunctional Lighting Unit
Light is one of the most important factors that will affect people's perception of space. The light position, lighting forms and brightness, and even the way a switch works will directly affect a person's physiological and psychological experience.
Light environment is so important, that it should be able to be easily improved and adjusted to adapt to a variety of scenarios' needs, so that to gives users a better living experience.
So I tried to give a simple and flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
LightCube is a basic lighting unit that can be placed anywhere to lighten a room in different ways. It can be switched on/off or even dimmed by simple hand gestures. Flexible, portable and easy to use, the LightCube allows users to adjust or create their own light environments conveniently.
With a matching LightShade it can be angled in different ways, to cater to different users. Combined with our accessories it can be used as a floor lamp, ceiling lamp, table lamp, etc.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The LightCube can be directly plugged into any power outlet. As it is equipped with infrared sensors, it can be switched on/off by waving your hand near the LightCube. Hovering your hand over it also adjusts the brightness. When used with Tulip LightShade, it can be placed at different angles to cater to users’ gestures and habits. For example at a 30-degree angle to read a book. Combined with our accessories like LightStand and LightFix, it can be used as a floor lamp,table lamp or ceiling lamp. It can also be portable, as it can hold an internal rechargeable battery that lasts seven hours.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2016 and is currently still running.

Survey,action and correlation research are the main research techniques used. The research objective is to improve the lighting environment in people’s daily lives.Research tools used include individual interviews, quantitative and qualitative analyses. 90% of respondents (social workers, housewives and children) were not satisfied with their daily life environment. 80% expressed that improving their light environment was not easy for them.
The research resulted in the finding that lighting solutions nowadays do not take user experience into account. Even in one single room, many lighting scenarios exist. A valuable insight is that light is one of the most important factors affecting people’s perception of space. The light position, forms and brightness, and even the way a switch works, will directly affect a person’s physiological and psychological experience. Based on this, we found it crucial to provide a simple and flexible solution that allows users to create or adjust their own light environments and improve their living environment.
How to create a simple product with a flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments. Specifically, we faced the challenge to find how to combine the active infrared transmitter with the lighting function module in order to create a better human interaction feature.
