Interview with DesignNest at Wednesday 26th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? DA: To solve daily problems that people struggle with. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? DA: I aimed to give a simple and flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? DA: I plan to design more accessories to make it more versatile and fit more situational needs. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? DA: 2 months FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? DA: Light environment is so important that it should be able to be easily improved and adjusted to adapt to a variety of scenarios, in such a way that it gives users a better living experience. I was inspired to solve problems that people have with their lighting environment. In pursuit of this, I aimed to give a simple and flexible solution that allows users to adjust or create their own light environments. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? DA: My design is produced for Allocacoc. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? DA: I chose to design a product in the lighting sector to align it with the company's plans. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? DA: Yixia Jiang, founder of Allocacoc. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? DA: Anyone and everyone who is interested in design, who would want a simple way to create their own lighting. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? DA: Flexible, portable and easy to use, the LightCube allows users to adjust or create their own light environments conveniently. You no longer need to install light bulbs, just plug it into the power socket and adjust the brightness to your liking. The gesture mode also lets you turn it on and off by simply waving your hand over it. Simple. Convenient. Easy. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? DA: Because my product is shaped like a cube. So I named it LightCube. This cube gives you light. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? DA: Solidworks FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? DA: The gesture mode allows you to turn if on/off by simply waving your hand over the LightCube. To adjust the brightness level, simply hold your hand above it until you meet your desired brightness level. Even after turning it off and back on, the LightCube will stay at this brightness level until the next time you adjust it. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? DA: Together with electronic engineers and a structural engineer. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? DA: Technology helps to turn ideas into real products! FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? DA: I did a survey and inquired many people how they feel about their current daily light environments. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? DA: What is a simple yet flexible solution? How can I make it technologically realisable? FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? DA: I want to help more people improve their daily lives, so if more people are aware of this product and decide to use this product, I will have helped to improve more people's lives. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? DA: From concept to mass production, it is really a very complex process, from which the knowledge I learned can help me to design the next product better and more efficiently. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? DA: No, thank you!
