DESIGN NAME: Express Rail Link West Kowloon Terminus
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Transportation
INSPIRATION: As a gateway to Hong Kong, the design connects the station with the surrounding urban context and makes one aware that “I am in Hong Kong”. The design compacted the supporting spaces more efficiently to allow for a large void down into the departure hall below. The outside ground plane bent down to the hall and the roof structure above gestures toward the harbour. The result is an around 40m high volume which focuses all attention through the south façade toward views of the city skyline.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The terminus will be one of the largest underground terminus stations in the world upon completed. The 380,000sqm facility with 15 tracks is currently under construction and will connect Hong Kong to Beijing, China. With the vision to improve and extend the city’s public realm, the impressive terminus has been designed with a fully accessible civic green on the rooftop overlooking the famous Victoria Harbour of Hong Kong.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The terminus will function as a regional hub as Hong Kong maintains economic and political incentives for China. The West Kowloon Terminus will connect directly to the national high-speed railway network currently under development in the Mainland, including the Beijing-Guangzhou and Hangzhou-Fuzhou-Shenzhen Passenger Lines.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Located centrally in Hong Kong within the city’s existing urban realm, the site is immediately adjacent to the future West Kowloon Cultural District and next to the Victoria Harbour required a design which was completely motivated by civic demand. The project is targeted to complete in the third quarter of 2018.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site’s prominence immediately adjacent to the future West Kowloon Cultural District and next to the Victoria Harbour required a design completely motivated by civic demand. Enriching the challenge was the reality that there could be approximately 294,000sqm of future topside development and the design has taken this into account and provided appropriate enabling works.
