DESIGN NAME: House Of The Tree
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Private Residence
INSPIRATION: Creating a retreat to escape the city with immediate extended family and friends. The site itself, which overlooks hills and mountains with a 200-year old oak tree standing long in the middle of the rocky land inspired us to design the house to revolve around and to be as open as possible to the nature without disturbing it while allowing the occupants to be inside and outside at the same time.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 9074 square meter site with its huge 200-year old oak tree very much dictated the positioning the design of the house. The massing blends with well oriented large expanses of glass merging the project into its rocky landscape. A cantilevered mass, which identified the main entrance, unites with a large pivoting wooden screen created a continuous visual frame for the site’s tree and the dramatic views of the mountains while resulting in a seamless transition from inside to outside.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: An inner courtyard is created as a result of the massing that revolves around the tree. The grouping of internal spaces follows the massing of the two storey house whose ground floor has the public functions such as guest area with kitchen, and gym. The first floor is privately dedicated for the family members, three large bedrooms with a living room that is connected with the ground floor through a double volume with curtain wall that overlooks the inner court.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The house’s masses are clear, different in texture and oriented to create a central courtyard. A cantilevered mass is connected with another mass through a skylight on the ceiling of the 1st floor which brings the nature light into the house. Other masses are connected through the pivoting wooden screen bridge. Simple, earthy palette of materials, concrete, steel, wood, and glass that blend strongly with the simple modern design are used merging the house into its landscape with its rocky land.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To innovate a farm house to escape the chaos of the city and to be an asylum to create and celebrate memories with family and friends while enjoying the freshness of Al Salt Mountains air and beautiful views. Therefore, our mission was to combine the client’s need in a comfortable modern house where you feel the proper proportion. Everything is subordinated to the client, fashioned for his use and pleasure, opened as possible to nature and the views to bring the outside inside.
CHALLENGE: Preserving the 200-year old tree with minimum disturbance and damage to the site required building around the tree. Therefore a floating mass over the entrance was constructed using inverted tension beams enabled a continuous flow of circulation and greenery to the inner semi shaded courtyard by the tree and that flow was strengthen by the large pivoting wooden screen that linked the inner courtyard with the backyard that has the swimming pool with the stunning views.
