DESIGN NAME: Water, The Source Of Life
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster
INSPIRATION: Water is the source of life. Water flow is shown in a variety of forms, sometimes condensed while sometimes scattered. By making use of this feature a series of marine animals are created on glass. They are gradually disappearing as water is drying out, which indicates the end of life for the lack of water. The endless of water flow makes life go on.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Water features high fluidity and flexibility, sometimes condensed while sometimes scattered. A series of marine animals were created by dropping and painting water on glass. As the water scattered and dried out, they were gradually disappearing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We have demonstrated a process of drawing marine animals with water on clean glass plate, where the water dropped, condensed and scattered, accordingly the images of those animals were formed and gradually disappeared.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 and finished in August 2016 in Changsha.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dropping and shaping water on clean and smooth glass is a key part of the design. The operator is required to have good control of the water flow and drops. In addition, light angle and exposure control during the capture shot make great contribution to the representation of the design.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This is a series of works on public service posters for environmental protection. It can be applied to advertising, product package design, web design etc.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Ocean pollution and dying animals are not new concerns on the earth. People know the urgency and importance of environmental protection but still many of them just take it as an understanding but not an action. Things are still getting worse in many areas around the world. This series of public service posters about marine animals and water protection are created for providing a visual communicative solution to the phenomena above. Pure water were dropped on clean glass, shaped in different images of marine animals which look beautiful but tender because they would disappear in 3-5 seconds as the drops dried out. This design is expected to be shown in various mass media like commercials, products packages and web site design etc. in the hope that this visual communication stirs more people to take an action to protect water resources and marine animals.
CHALLENGE: There are two challenges in our creating. One is drawing marine animals with pure water on smooth glass plate. Once dropped on glass, water flow and drops could maintain a shape in only 3-5 seconds because of water’s flexibility and fluidity. Hundreds of tests were conducted to made precise control of those water flow and drops. The other one is shot capture. The limit time of shape maintenance, light angle and exposure control should be taken into consideration in order to have a clear view of the design.
