DESIGN NAME: Compose Cove by i2Systems
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Indirect LED Lighting
INSPIRATION: Imagine an illuminated office space with a clean quiet ceiling, free from glare, hanging pendants, or acrylic lenses while still exceeding ASHRAE efficiency standards. This is what designers can create with Compose: the first indirect, code compliant cove LED lighting system for open plan.
We began with a concept that designers want light fixtures to disappear in the space. The fixture is not meant to be a statement piece. Compose fills the space volumetrically without glare.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Compose is the first indirect, code compliant LED cove lighting system for open plan. This new concept for lighting work place hides in a cove only 2.5” wide by 1.4” tall and lowers the purchasing and installation cost of current LED linear cove technology by up to 30%. These features make Compose an excellent choice for almost any cove application including elevator lobbies and circulation areas.
Our proprietary optical system took over 2 years to develop. Compose projects light across the ceiling at near 100 lm/w efficiency, and also delivers performance in the near field to avoid hotness and inconsistency when mounted as close as 6” from the ceiling. This innovation enables the Compose system to deliver 40 foot candles of light (29” A.F.F.) at .7W per square foot in open plan and .5W per square foot in private office spaces.
The fixture is comprised of three unique pre-made mounting extrusions for tape and spackle dry wall mounting, acoustical ceiling tile mounting, and direct wall mounting. It recesses into the architectural detail and accommodates any “made-to-measure field conditions. The contractor can simply install the mounting extrusion and after all ceiling construction is completed, press and click into place the LED modules. No adjustments are necessary.
The Compose LED modules accept any voltage between 100 and 277 volts AC and are plug and play, made in 1’, 4’, and 18” lengths, programmable from 5-12 watts per foot, cUL listed, and directly dimmable via 0-10V. The proprietary optical system is also designed with lateral throw to allow an up to 2” gap between fixtures without dark spots and has been designed with microstructures in the surface for blending of the LED light and achieving color consistency within a 2-Step McAdam ellipse.
Additionally, Compose eliminates the dark, unevenly lit corners with inside and outside factory premade illuminated corners with the same output and optical performance as the linear LED module for a seamless appearance.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Compose allows the designer to do what could not be done before which is to light a space indirectly, just 6” from the ceiling, and still exceed the watts per square foot energy codes. More, however, is that it is not a single fixture, it is a complete system. It is the first product of its kind to feature a lit corner module for both inside and outside corners. It’s the smallest of its kind at only 2.5” wide by 1.4” tall. It lowers the cost of installation by up to 30% by not requiring the contractor to frame and build out a cove to mount and hide the fixture into. And it can accommodate any “made-to-measure field condition. The LED modules are plug-and-play, powered by the standard building voltages without external drivers, and mount without tools. Each part and piece of the system has been meticulously designed with both the design community and contractor in mind.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2015 in Morris, Connecticut and finished in November 2016, and the first project was installed in December 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It was critical for us to not only design a product that would appeal to the design community but one that was also affordable and contractor friendly. The optical system took over 18 months to develop and included precise optical design combined with Edison-like prototyping and test in order to achieve an extremely flat beam with high lumen per watt efficiency. Compose isn’t just a light fixture, it’s a complete system aimed at providing simple made-to-measure installation across a variety of field conditions. This is evident in all of the different mounting extrusions that we developed to accommodate almost any ceiling transition. There are five different styles: tape and spackle flat front, tape and spackle knife edge, acoustical ceiling tile (ACT) flat front, ACT knife edge, and wall mount.
Lighting only 6” away from the ceiling indirectly with the ability to accommodate a variety of field conditions, demands extremely consistent color, a variety of fixture sizes, and the ability to create gaps between the fixtures without dark spots. The gap issue was particularly difficult to overcome with our optical design, because the back and front of the LED module are even with the mounting extrusion. Even the slightest gap could create a shadow. The Compose fixtures are able to be spaced up to 2.5” away from each other without a visible shadow. Given the three different module lengths and a 2.5” allowable gap, we are able to accommodate any field length with continuous light.
We also recognized that the common method of accommodating corners was not satisfactory to the design community. The Compose corner is striation free and has the same light output and uniformity as the straight sections for a seamless appearance. Even with an extremely flat beam, there is no striation on the opposite wall when the inside corner is used. Both inside and outside corners are available, and while the corner uses similar components to the straight LED module, the effort to perfect the corner was as if we had to develop an entirely new product.
In order to be contract friendly, a custom power supply was designed by our team in order to be extremely small in size, accommodate 12” and 18” increments, and allow the fixture to efficiently run off of any voltage between 100 and 277 volts AC without any extra control gear. The fixture also has built in 0-10 dimming and is programmable so the specifier can select any wattage between 5 and 12 watts in 1W increments. There is no need to specify voltage or dimming options. It all comes built-in the product. The installer is able to run up to 100’ from a single power feed, and the power feeds are custom molded in order to minimize any potential gaps between the fixtures.
The tape and spackle mounting extrusions are all pre-punched with holes already in place for the contractor, and the modules secure to the extrusions without the use of tools. The installer simply places the module into the extrusion and presses down until it clicks into place. The modules are easily removed by pressing on the back of the LED module to release the mechanism.

CHALLENGE: The product had a variety of obstacles that it had to overcome that required expertise across disciplines in electronic, optical, mechanical, and thermal design.
In order to be able to make the fixture of this size and still efficiently accommodate a 277VAC input required significant time, energy, and expertise in microelectronics design and firmware. In addition to the high voltage, another challenge was to meet codes concerning electromagnetic interference and emissions.
The product also had to meet safety codes which at small size become very difficult due to the lack of spacing available for creepage and clearances inside of the device.
With respect to the optical system design, we needed to be able to not only achieve a distribution to create the lighting effect but also be able to light the space efficiently. We also had to accommodate spaces between the fixtures without creating shadows as well as solve the issue of lit corners.
For the mechanical design, we had to make the product easy to install and affordable. Numerous contractors visited our facility and installed prototypes and provided feedback on ways to improve the product. Lighting consultants also provided feedback on the style and proportions of the visible lines of the product.
Thermally, the fixture had to be able to dissipate up to 12W per foot and still keep within the acceptable tolerances of all the components in order to provide a long fixture life.
