| DESIGN NAME: Unusual Beauty PRIMARY FUNCTION: INSPIRATION: Inspired by the crazy and beautiful side of mental disorders, I was trying to achieve unusual and wild beauty by imagining what people's brain look like and from their perspective, what the world looks like. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a series of prints I made for one of the most important person in my life. I've been accompanied and experienced a lot with her until she recovered from depression. My aspiration is using my strength of art to encourage people like her, and inspire people to see the beautiful side of mental disorder. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Unusual Beauty attempted to show a variety of prints inspired by mental disorder in a contemporary and cheerful color way. My hope is to give audience a optimistic vision to what had been passively seen. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The pattern were initially made in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Cinema 4D. Then the final composition was manipulated in Adobe Photoshop. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 54 x 54 Inches 300 dpi, RGB TAGS: design, print, unusual, iridescence RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research included a wide research base, including books, films and psychology courses, as well as a variety of communications with patients and people whose friend or family have mental disorder. CHALLENGE: The challenge definitely was how to think from their perspectives and translate into an unusual however aesthetic form. The Unusual Beauty collection explores concept in two directions: the illusion vision created by people who have mental disorder like OCD- camouflage text, melting metal and glitchy art effects; and playful looks of brain and nerves- exploding brain, twist mind. NAME: KAIJIE CHEN PROFILE: Kaijie Chen, a surface & visual designer living in New York, holds a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering & Design and a M.S. degree in Surface Imaging. With diverse experience, she had a full year of teaching experience in textile design at a university level, also has helped companies to develop designs and concepts for color, textiles, flooring, furniture, products, packaging, visual merchandising and showrooms. Kaijie has pushed her works to make a real impression by solving a problem from multiple perspectives, not only reconciling different materials with innovative technologies, also blending art, craft, science, business savvy, and an astute understanding of customers and markets. |
