DESIGN NAME: New material from Arundo Donax
PRIMARY FUNCTION: New material from Arundo Donax
INSPIRATION: My inspiration came from the tradicional artisans from the Occidental Mediterranean basin that used to work with the Arundo donax but not anymore. Knowing the low impact of this material I thought that it would be interesting to work with this element to re-invent the way to manipulate it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Experimentation and development to create a new material or a new entity of material from the plant species Arundo donax. This plant is an invasive species in much of the Mediterranean basin and other countries of the world; therefore, it is detrimental to native ecosystems and their flora and fauna. The intention of this project has been to use a common material and with few productive uses which results in the reduction of the species and in the improvement of the ecosystems.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The adaptations of different samples or variants of the new material were endless. This process of experimentation made it possible to produce many results from a single source element. Of course, not all the results were positive, many samples had minimum properties necessary to be functional. Also, during the experiment I let myself be guided by positive results to see where it would lead me. I achieved the best samples from a combination of cane dust and shavings, and rice and corn bio resine that I produced myself.
The new material developed from cane and bio resines was very strong and malleable as well as easier and cheaper to produce. From there, I tested the new material by creating a series of objects. The possibilities for this new material are endless in terms of their formal and structural applications. All of this while keeping production costs low.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 and finished in June 2016 in Barcelona.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The work process itself was very methodical, always favoring the use of material with very low environmental impact, as well as supporting the local economy and employment of artisans and small businesses.
The experiment consisted of three steps applying a similar test-error. First, the cane was transformed in different ways. Second, with each of the results obtained from the first step, I applied multiple processes and supplied the characteristics of different materials to make a second change. Lastly, the samples were finalized and prepared for further testing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The new material from the mixture of arundo donax variants and bio resines has many solutions and the possibilities for this new material are endless in terms of their formal and structural applications. The mixture is very moldable and once hardened it's very light and resistant.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: At first, I researched on the raw material, Arundo donax. I discovered that it is very cheap to get and it has very interesting qualities. In addition, its use would has a positive impact for the native environment as it would reduce the population of this invasive species.
The methodology of the experimentation for the new material was a trial and error. I divide the work into different steps, where I gradually got several results, some with a very interesting qualities.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to use a raw material commonly used in the old times and almost forgotten on the present days, and transform it in a valuable material for the current industrial production.
