| DESIGN NAME: 2017 China Timelines PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calendar INSPIRATION: People always ask when is the best time to go somewhere, where is the best destination in this month. This calendar answers the questions by planning a 12 months journey in the best cities in their best time in China. The aim is to present a calendar for travel enthusiasts to get inspired - where to go, best places to stay, best time for the destinations in China. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: China Timelines is a paper-craft attraction calendar. It includes 12 cities, each for every month of the year in their best time for traveling in China. Put together those elements in different forms and enjoy creating your own impression of each city. It was designed to brighten up our space. Two representative colors were picked from the original city photos and combined with the shape of city map, as strong visual perceptions. It was also enhanced with traditional Chinese characters. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Rip along dash lines off the packaging box, users could get two boxes with folded paper inside as base. Without glue or scissors, the attractions kit can be freely assembled into the base as a calendar, with foreground, middle distance and background. Users can easily pull out pieces of a city from the base and change them after the month. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed from October to November 2016 in Hangzhou, China. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The China Timelines calendar is produced by high level printing on white cardboard. The packaging box is with a tear off strip to open, leaving a customized design structure as base to make it recyclable. The different shapes of attractions in each city are delicately die-cut and easy-to-assemble. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Packaging box: 120mm(H) x 200mm(W) x 15mm(D). Sheet size: 148mm x 105mm. TAGS: calendar, China, city, attractions, travel, promotion item RESEARCH ABSTRACT: People oriented toward traveling in a foreign country is increasing in the world and China has become a more attractive destination. Therefore, we released the China Timelines calendar in order to promote tourism industry in one way and give inspirations for travel enthusiasts in another way. We aimed to design a product, which could be functionally used and displayed as a decoration, and meanwhile we would like to bring together the traditional Chinese culture and modern daily life. CHALLENGE: The challenge was that this work had to be very structured and simple. We need to make the pieces of each city into one postcard size cardboard, and all attachments such as bases together with the packaging box into one whole.
