DESIGN NAME: Techo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calendar
INSPIRATION: My motivation was to create a multi-functional calendar, which can be used at different scenarios in a daily working routine. The structure was inspired by the folding electronic tablet case. When flipped open, it can be used as a desktop calendar. Easily flipped to close, it can be carried to business meetings as a planner and a notebook. Everyone is always searching for calendar during meetings!
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Techo calendar features a foldable structure. When this structure is folded up, it stands as a desktop calendar; when the structure is closed, it is a handy notebook. On the content pages, dates and global public holidays are indicated. Each page also features a fast fact about the firm in order to promote the brand directly to the users. The foldable structure is the cover of the calendar as well when it is closed, making it an immediate gift with no extra packaging is needed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The calendar is being presented in a form of notebook. When the user opens and folds up the cover, it becomes a desktop calendar. Whenever it is needed, the user can close the cover again and carry it around as a notebook. Regarding the content pages, the front side indicates the month and features a fast fact of the firm, while there is space for note writing on the back.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in Hong Kong, and was finished in November in Hong Kong. It was launched in Asia-Pacific regions in January 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: When developing the concept of this calendar, the direction was how to incorporate more functions and add value to it. After observations and interviews with desktop calendar users, I found that many people carry their desktop calendar to business meetings for project timeline management. This inspired me to design a desktop calendar which is convenient as well as visually attractive to carry around.
CHALLENGE: The design process kicked off by working on the folding structure, which is the most challenging part of this calendar. It began with drafting the technical drawing of the structure. And then three rounds of prototype were created to make sure it is feasible and practical. It was because the structure consists of six panels, the sizes of each panels has to be accurate in order to make the calendar able to stand firmly and able to be closed probably.
