| DESIGN NAME: Bag iStrap PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bluetooth luggage tracker INSPIRATION: One of worst nightmares for travellers is probably to wait and fight in the queue to see if their luggage arrives on the conveyor belt in the airport terminal. Hence we start to wonder if we can design a device that is able to alert people when their luggage arrives, to alarm them if it is stolen and help the airport staff with a search function when the luggage is lost. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bag iStrap is a Bluetooth wireless connected device for luggage. Once the device is tied to the luggage, it will be able to inform the user once their luggage has arrived by a mobile application. Unique technology allows to share information function with others, such as airport staff, to help to reclaim the lost luggage. With the straplike design, you can keep your favourite luggage tag and at the same time keep your luggage on track. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Bag iStrap is a wireless Bluetooth gadget designed with concepts of affordability, simplicity, durability and user-friendly. Bag iStrap is attached to the luggage and communicates via Bluetooth with the mobile devices (iPhone or Android) via a dedicated app. The app will provide information on the luggage (photo, owner) unique ID of the luggage. In operation the App and the Bag iStrap will interoperate to give the following information via instant messaging : (1) Baggage in range and arriving on the conveyor belt (2) Baggage lost or stolen alarm (3) Track luggage and recognise the Unique ID and owner. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2015 and mass production shall be starting in summer 2016. Development and design in Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bag iStrap uses Bluetooth low energy 4.0 with a detection range in a free field up to 40 meters. Powered by a thin cell battery CR2016, we managed to reduce the net weight of Bag iStrap to approximately 8g. Inside this tiny device, advanced electronics will be recognised when the traveller is using their luggage. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 30 mm x Depth 200mm x Height 7 mm, Weight 8g TAGS: Luggage Tag, Bluetooth, Track, Share, App, Strap, Alarm, IOT, gadget,wireless RESEARCH ABSTRACT: According to WorldTracer data from SITA in 2015, the total number of mishandled bags is 23.1 million, and missing bags cost the industry USD 2.3 billion. And yet, most of the existing smart trackers are pricey and require frequent battery change due to high power consumption. This stimulated us to consider the possibility to design and develop a luggage tracker that is both affordable and battery-saving. CHALLENGE: When starting this design project, we would like to design something that is petite with the feeling of simplicity and modern. Through the market research, we found that most of the existing products are themselves an independent luggage tag with no toleration of another tag at the same time. This is why we design a strap-like luggage tag to allow users to use our product and still be able to keep their favourite tag intact.
