| DESIGN NAME: NBS-MK1 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wristwatch INSPIRATION: Nuclear fusion reactor has inspired the NBS’ watch design. The greenhouse effect is worsening and natural resources of the earth will soon be exhausted. One of the best options for a clean and sustainable energy is Fusion Power. Essentially Nuclear fusion power has the same amount of energy as nuclear power, without any of the radioactive contamination issues. NBS symbolizes the dream of securing a clean and sustainable energy for future generations. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: NBS designed with practicality and an industrialized look that heavy duty watch wearers will be delighted by. The NBS has incorporated various industrial elements such as the robust casing, removable screws that run through the watch. The special straps and metal buckle and loop details work to reinforce the masculine image of the watch. The movement’s balance wheel and escapement fork’s operation can be seen through the dial emphasizing the overall mechanical image that the NBS projects. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The case, dial, hands, straps, buckle, and unique metal warranty card are all unique original designs by Wing-Keung Wong of Hong Kong. The design concept began in April of 2014 and has gone through an intensive process until June of 2015. Production took 6 months with the first batch of watches becoming available in October 2015. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept of the design started at 2014. It took eighteen months for the design to be finalized. It took another six months for the production to be finished. All of the design work and watch assembly is done in Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: NBS' details represent the solid construction of the nuclear fusion reactor. The tri-sectional design has a bold futuristic appearance. The dial is modeled on the nuclear fusion reactor’s core. The robust casing and the three main screws resemble the strong image of the plant. The metal buckle and loop reinforces the masculine image, and also help balancing the watch's weight. The bottom cover looks like a safety vault door. It can be worn comfortably because of the carefully designed bottom. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Automatic Movement / Lumed Hour, Minute hands / 49mm case / 66mm from lug to lug / 20.2mm thick / Aluminum Bronze case / Satin and Sandblast finishing / Screw-down 316L Stainless Steel Inner Bottom Cover with Mirror finishing Logo / Three Main Screws locked Bezel and Outer Bottom Cover / Automatic Helium Escape Valve / Windowed Dial / Sapphire Crystal / 1,000M Water Resistant / One set of fine genuine leather straps and one set of unique canvas straps / Uniquely designed buckle and Loop TAGS: robust, huge, nuclear fusion reactor, futuristic, mechanical, industrial RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Most of the time was devoted in adjusting the lugs’ sizes and distances from the case. The lugs have to be far enough to avoid the pin from contacting with the main screw at 6 O’clock, but not too far away to leave too much space in between. Selecting the movement that look best through the open windows on the dial is another big challenge. The unique canvas strap had broken a new record of broken needles during the manufacturing process because of the extreme thickness of the strap. CHALLENGE: First, it was the overall look and feel of the case. Especially the exaggerated screws that run through the top and bottom that truly function as locking the bezel and the bottom cover to the watch. Second, the strap, buckle, and loop have to match the robust look of the case and to help balancing the watch so that while being heavy, the watch will not slip around the wrist while wearing.
