Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Wing Keung Wong (WW) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Wing Keung Wong by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design NBS-MK1 here.

Interview with Wing Keung Wong at Sunday 23rd of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
WW: The greenhouse effect is worsening and natural resources of the earth will soon be exhausted. Scientists are working so hard to find a clean and sustainable energy. One of the best options is Fusion Power. Essentially Nuclear fusion power has the same amount of energy as nuclear power, without any of the radioactive contamination issues. Ultimately that is why it is the most practical and sustainable clean energy solution for the future. A nuclear fusion reactor has inspired the ‘NBS’ watch design. Its structure is exceptionally robust and contains many industrial characteristics. Each of these meticulous details represents the solid construction of the nuclear fusion reactor. The cohesive tri-sectional design of the watch (with exposed mechanical elements) has a bold futuristic appearance. Overall the aesthetic of the dial is modeled on the nuclear fusion reactor’s core. NBS symbolizes the dream of securing a clean and sustainable energy for future generations.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
WW: There are two main focuses in designing the NBS. One is to add as much industrial elements into the design while maintaining the simplest form of structure and comfortability of wearing. Two is to resemble the look and feel of a nuclear fusion reactor (from my own imaginary).

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
WW: First is to modify the structure of the lugs, so that the overall look will not be as bulky. Second is to release new dial designs. A few of special dial designs have been made and prototypes are being built.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
WW: The first design only took a few days to complete, but it took about 15 months from initial concept to the final design.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
WW: Our mission is to bring change into the very evolved watch industry, and NBS is no doubt the one of a kind style in watch design, so I think the design has commissioned.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
WW: NBS has already been produced and is already selling great on the market.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
WW: Please refer to question No. 3

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
WW: No. This design is 100% my own creation. Even the nuclear fusion reactor that inspired NBS' design is also an imaginary object of my own.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
WW: Watch enthusiasts and people who love revolutionary or bald design is the target customer for this design.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
WW: The whole design alone has no similar concept in the watch market. The structure of NBS is so bald. The three windows on the dial are a very revolutionary concept. For most if not all watches that use skeleton movement, they use complete open dial design to expose the skeleton movement. NBS' dial covers most of the movement, but only exposes important parts of the movement through the three windows and the logo. Moving parts like the balance wheel and the escapement fork can be seen through the windows, as well as the spring compartment and the working of the crown stem. This emphasizes the overall mechanical image of the NBS. The three exaggerated screws that run through the bezel, the case, and the outer bottom cover projects a very strong image of heavy industry that matches the image of a nuclear fusion reactor. The three screws are actually working that locks the bezel and the outer bottom cover to the case. The balanced and unified tri-sectioned design has been implemented for the whole watch, from the bezel to the dial, then to the bottom cover. NBS has two bottom cover. This resembles the security needed by a nuclear fusion reactor. The outer bottom cover that secured by the three screws represents the security gate of the nuclear fusion reactor. The distinctive buckle and metal loop of the straps are also designed to match with the overall tough and rough image of the watch. It also helps balance the weight of the watch on the wrist.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
WW: NBS stands for no bull shXt. It is the name of this watch, and it is also the start of the more advanced line of DELTAt's watches. Started from NBS, all watches that have very special characteristics will be one of the watches in the NBS line. NBS means the best design, the best effort, the best material, and the best craftsmanship.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
WW: Please refer to question No. 10

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
WW: Many modifications had been made during the design and prototype phrases. The size and the placement of the three screws that run through the bezel and the bottom cover of the watch had changed many times, as well as the size, the shape, and location of the lugs. If the size of the three screws is a little smaller or bigger, the overall image of the watch differed a lot. Also the placement for the three screws. If you look very carefully, the angles between the three screws are actually not divided evenly. The angles between them are now that make the NBS look best. The size and location of the lugs had also gone through so many changes. The length from lug to lug cannot be shortened anymore because of the screw at 6 o’clock, so in order to restrain the length from lug to lug, the lugs had to be shaped and placed with many considerations. Not to mention the comfortability of watch that must be maintained.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
WW: A few watch reviewers advised me to do so.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
