DESIGN NAME: Elemental Classic Series I
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Semi-precious Stones Timepieces
INSPIRATION: Both the cultural symbolism and the natural beauty of the selected and elusive, yet significant, stones inspire MYKU. For centuries, the practical application of stone has included use in architecture, art and jewelry. The meaning that stones carry has also been extolled, precious pieces passed down through generations, around the world. Their one-of-a-kind timepieces carry the weight and longevity of these stones.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Born from a devotion for the unique and prestigious, MYKU creates its revered timepieces from semi-precious stones using top-of-the-line techniques. MYKU is committed to creating intrinsic and timeless designs, carefully crafted from materials that will withstand the test of time.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: All of our products are designed and developed in house, from the initial sketch to prototype. Stripped down to its basic elements, our design philosophy is to create timeless products of the highest quality. Our global partners carefully craft every mechanism of the watch. Our close collaborations are built on experience and expertise in different areas alongside a shared passion for detail. Made and assembled in Switzerland, MYKU watches are subjected to stringent quality control during assembly.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2014 in Hong Kong and finished in January 2016. It took almost two years from the original idea, to ideation, conceptualisation, prototyping, product development & production. Throughout the different design phases, we have been sourcing and working with partners over the world in Hong Kong, China, Thailand, France, Italy, Germany & Switzerland.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Case: Diecasting, CNC polishing and IP Gold Plating.
The Leather: Hand made in Italy.
The Stone: From Brasil, onyx is a variety of layered Chalcedony that consists of banded of straight or parallel alternating shades of milky white agate and black formed by natural rhythmic crystallization found as nodules in siliceous volcanic rock. The stones are sliced with high precision via CNC machining in Germany.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Designing a watch with a stone as a dial comes with its problematics. Because it is a natural material, it comes with flaws. Learning how to deal with them on a production scale was the challenging part. What minimum thickness can we reach? How does it impact the movement? How to assemble to markers? How to assemble the stone with the least breakage rate on the assembly line? Every single question offered different paths to take and prototyping numerous iterations was the answer.
CHALLENGE: Cutting stones in a way that reveals the inner, layered beauty requires high precision and meticulous skills. The layers take millions of years to form, and only artfully slicing through the top, tough layer reveals the true inherent beauty of a stone. Each cut results in a unique stone face. MYKU sought the best semi-precious stones cutting factories from Asia to Europe. Their last stop was Germany where they found a partner with the technical and man-crafting know-how in order to slice the stones at thin as 1.8mm thickness.
