DESIGN NAME: 019 Smile
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Flag
INSPIRATION: Introduction to Kinesics: An Annotation System for Analysis of Body Motion and Gesture. (Birdwhistell, R. L. 1952)
Kinesics was first used (in 1952) by Ray Birdwhistell, an anthropologist who wished to study how people communicate through posture, gesture, stance, and movement.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 019 Gallery usually installs a new form of flag for every new exhibition. We made a design of 019 which is the combination of Zero, One, Nine, using Smile symbol & icon. The number Zero is expressed as the left eye, number One as the nose and number Nine as the right eye.
In addition, we represented the facial expressions of a smiling face by adding the symbolized smiling mouth shape. Like this, we expressed the Gallery name 019 in Kinesics-mode graphic.
019 Gallery does nonverbal communication through the flag. 019 is always welcoming you with a smiling face.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This flag is like a symbol representing a specific figure or place. Accordingly, I came to make a design in a meaning that 019 Gallery always gives visitors warm welcome with a smiling face by visualizing the numbers of 019.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This work was begun in June, 2015 in Korea, and finished in August in the same year. In addition, this flag was exhibited at 019 Gallery located in Belgium in August, 2015. Also, in August in the same year, it was exhibited once again at the place named Won Gallery, and this work is currently owned by 019 Gallery in 2016.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I researched people’s emoticons consisting of symbols, which have been much used today, with a more in-depth approach, and looked into how accurately and well such symbols expressed and described people’s feelings.
CHALLENGE: How intimately the expression of designed kinetics can be shown, and come close to people seemed like a new challenge.
