PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Cup Concept

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration for the project were creatures of the deep sea, the body plan of medusae and their metabolism. The cup has a holder in the inside, similar to the animals body plan. By using translucent plastic 3d printing filamnets that are food safe and hoping that the nearer future will offer even more food safe materials in 3d printing, the cup wants to define the plastic cup more as a sculptural appliance.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
"Mesoglea" concept is a design for a 3d printed cup made from food safe translucent filaments. The design is inspired, as ists name says, by deep sea creatures, medusae in this case. In accordance to its natural role model, the cup as a mouth piece o the inside, which is aimed to hold components of your drink like lemon pieces, providing a better dissolution. "Mesoglea" concept aims to transform the plastic cup into a more artistic object.

The Design is a cup which has an inlay that can hold inside parts of a long drink eg a lemon or n olive. Being held fixed in the drink, the components of the lemon can better dissolve in the drink.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
I started developing the project in 2013 , it took me half a year and an earlier prototype was presented at Macef Milan in September 2013. The models were made in Germany, near Cologne

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Mesoglea is a concept for a 3d printed cup. It is made from 3d printed with translucent filament plastics that have polished on the outside and was applied with food grade coating.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The idea of the design originated in deep see creatures like the Medusae, which have that transparent exoskeleton, called Mesogleae. Their body plan and anatomy inspired the design, as they travel by propulsion. so i did research on bionic design. The other thing was creating a cup, which functions in two positions: whether it stands uptight or inclined, so that it could look like a creature on the move. So it was a matter of equilibrum, which was solved through adjusting the wall thickness of the cup. This was researched in3d programs as well as in early printed prototypes. Last thing researched through 3 d rendering and models were the sharp edges that consist of consecutive grooves. Their aim is to break the light and create a shiny surface that resembles of the bioluminescent abilities of the deep sea creatures.

CHALLENGE:
The creative challenge was to produce an intricate more complicated form, which give a not typical plastic look and feel. This should be obtained through 3d printing and the weight of the concept, as it has a heavier body. By adding thicker walls in the lower part, the cup can also be held inclined and is stable. This it can also display its more intricate inside and looks like a medusa moving. There was also the challenge to create a reflection on the surface that is reminiscent of the bioluminescence of deep see creatures. This is made
