DESIGN NAME: Distortion Series
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book Jackets
INSPIRATION: I was inspired greatly by the three basic shapes. These shapes naturally convey the project as a series already, but also represented the different types of distortion perfectly. Looking at Chip Kidd's "Dry" book jacket design urged me to construct my own props and photograph them for the front covers. I wanted the typography on the jackets to be affected by the different forms of distortion, and the result really gives a sense of what each book is about with minimal effort.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These book jackets are a conceptual exploration of unifying three written works that were published by three different authors. What unifies the books is this central idea of distortion, which is represented by each novel in a different manner. The forms of distortion explored are physical, extraterrestrial and mental. Additionally, the three basic shapes and color choices serve as unifiers but also represent the corresponding form of distortion.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This series was designed to grab attention when on bookshelves. The jackets themselves simply wrap around the hardbound book covers.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in March of 2015 and concluded in April of 2015. Project was based out of Los Angeles, California.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: My process involved building small props and photographing them for each book jacket. Physically cutting and assembling the typography for the props really added an additional layer of satisfaction to the project for me. The photographed props were inkjet printed in black and white, which would become the book jacket. Finally, the jackets were silkscreen printed to introduce striking color combinations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research included observation and studying of typographic compositions as well as several book jacket designs. The objective was to ultimately assess the scope of work so that something original could be created. This research was gathered through the use of web and print media.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge behind this project was selecting three written works from completely different authors and unifying their work through a single concept.
