DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Sense of Utility

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Ring

INSPIRATION:
I want my design to appeal against planned obsolescence, as a major sustainability issue, which leads to tragic consequences for people and the Earth. I embrace the idea of Slow Fashion Theory of Prof. Fletcher, where the "prescription" is to buy less and to care more. So I created something which is encompassing usefulness, wearability, beauty and most importantly, it is going to last. What can be more timeless and fashionable than tastefully arranged table enjoyed by stylish people.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
My design represents a conceptual silver goblet ring, designed to be used, both as a statement jewellery piece and a tableware product. It is symbiosis between utility and jewellery. In fact, either on the body or on the table, it is jewellery which is embedding strong design aesthetics, sense of usefulness and wearability.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is conceptual hybrid between statement ring and tableware product. This beautiful object can play the role of statement ring, giving a pinch of sparkle dust to its owner. It can be used in pairs for love rituals such as engagements and weddings. This atmosphere become becomes full of bright emotions and joy.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2015 in London College of Fashion and finished in November 2015.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This piece was made from silver plated bronze. The hemisphere of the goblet was spinned and polished, while the ring and the hanle were made using investment casting from handmade wax model , which was precisely finished and silver plated. When is touched it carries sense of consistency.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
W-125mm D-60mm H-82mm Materials: Silver plated bronze Process: Investment casting from handmade wax model, metal spinning, soldering of the components, finish, polish, silver plating Wight:60gr Colour: Silver

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I made research over different aspects of sustainable development and ecology and came across to the theory of Prof Fletcher's academic work on Eco Fashion and sustainability projects. I embraced the idea of Slow Fashion. In order to twist myself into meaningful sustainable cause, I decided to create something useful which is going to last. I discovered how people associate Usefulness with objects of their closest surroundings.

CHALLENGE:
the most difficult part of this project was estimating the optimal weight of the piece. It has to be heavy enough to stay firmly on the table but at the same time not too overweight in order to give a comfortable touch for pleasant interaction.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
TheNose by Liliya Milpetrova

PROFILE:
The Nose is much more than a fashion brand. It is a new concept of accepting and viewing the world from an aesthetic perspective and of the uniqueness of people. Liliya Milpetrova- the creator of The Nose- is an artist with a simple vision: to have her creations and her story inspire others to find inner harmony. The name stems from Lilia's awkwardness in her bumpy nose during her teenage years. She is more than familiar with self-esteem issues: she suffered from Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Growing up in an era where a "bumped" nose is often considered an imperfection, or even more drastically a defect, she has taken her pain from this negativity and channelled it into a fashion accessories line aimed at people who like and want “themselves”. The development of this designer brand has not only allowed Liliya to enhance hear own self-image, but provided a way for other people to express their beauty through creativity and celebration of both our faults and our beauties, and the blurred line between the two. Lilia’s ability to turn "imperfection" into fashion is a trademark that appeals to everyone, especially those who suffer from BBD and other self-image issues. The Nose is both geared towards bringing out the best of what we have- our natural, beautiful self, and allowing it to shine. Liliya was born and raised in Bulgaria. In 2009, at the age of 27, she left her native country for London where she continued to study and develop her career as an artist. Having trained in Industrial Design and Fine Arts, she started to create one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery, sculptures and other curious objects intended not just to express a concept but to give a visual plesure to the viewer. Liliya ashieves that by applying consummate skills of craftsmanship to every detail. Liliya’s work has been incorporated in many exhibitions and shows such as the Society of Women Artists (SWA) at Mall Galleries in London; British Jewellery Association & International Jewellery; London Fashion Week, Africa Fashion Week London, Craft Central London and others. Her philanthropic ideas has drawn the attention of prestigious magazines and newspapers like Elle, the Guardian and TimeOut.
