| DESIGN NAME: PRISMA oro PRIMARY FUNCTION: Door Handle INSPIRATION: We focused our research on the "door handle" which we believe can become an important piece of furniture. The protagonist of this handle is its "architectural& UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Prisma Oro is a unique and precious door handle, entirely handmade in Italy. We like to call this design "functional sculpture" as it combines sculptural and functional elements in one object. The door handle becomes a unique work where material, shape and plasticity are the protagonists. Our aim is to introduce a new decorativism that is able to relate with contemporary architectural space and interior design. Prisma Oro becomes the theme and the unexpected form. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This object is a door handle PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Florence in January 2015 and finished in June 2015. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For the production of this handle, we made first a clay prototype and then a plaster one. After, we performed a 3D scan and printed the handle in resin. The resin sample was used to produce an aluminum sand cast handle. Then, we applied a gold leaf finish to it and a durable, transparent and protective varnish. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 160 mm x Depth 50 mm x Height 30 mm TAGS: handle, handmade, decoration, sculpture, gold, alluminum, shape, design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We carried out extensive research on door handle production techniques. We looked for craft production techniques that would allow us to create unique forms, in different metals. At the end of this process, we decided to use traditional sculpture techniques, such as sand and lost wax casting. Our research also focused on various finishes, among which is the handmade gold leaf. The NJ Interiors Project is a collaboration between the sculptor Jacopo Candotti and the designer Nicole Valenti. CHALLENGE: This project was published and reviewed by several design magazines. The biggest research challenge was finding technologies that would allow us to give the handles a more complex form, as well as artisans capable to satisfy our requests. NAME: NJ interiors PROFILE: The NJ interior project started in 2014. Two young artists and longtime friends from Italy’s South Tyrol, Jacopo Candotti (sculptor) and Nicole Valenti (designer), decided to begin a new adventure together in a small home workshop located in the heart of Florence. Their creations are considered “functional sculpture”. This year they are presenting a collection of door handles, knobs and furniture. These items are characterised by the fusion of sculpture and functionality, which come together to create unique objects. Every item of their collection is entirely handmade by the best Italian craftsmen. The NJ project is a journey through the universe of forms and materials, in which inspiration gives birth to high-quality and original objects: a tropical bird, the texture of a rock, the shape of an unusual branch become door handles through the sculptural medium. NJ Studio wants to create signature spaces and atmospheres in which sculpture and decor are in close relation with architecture and contemporary interior design. Their art lab creates functional objects and provides personalized advice and interior design services. |
